Price yesterday was 129.9/liter at one Ultramar station in Kanata, Ontario. Price today (Tuesday) is 129.9/liter. When I asked the attendant what happened to the discount she said it happens automatically at midnight. I said no it didn't. She looked confused but couldn't help.

By scanning the website for prices at other Ultramar stations it doesn't look like their prices are any lower than at other stations.

I just found out about Ultramar Diesel Tuesdays. Is this normal behaviour?

Yes, it is very normal behaviour in Canada. Not at all normal behavior down here in the lower 48

Armby - While I agree with your logic in posting in the "General Gas Talk" category, since you're primarily interested in Ultramar stations in the National Capital Region, why not try the Ottawa discussion (although it doesn't seem to have much activity)?

I heard back again from the Ultramar customer service rep regarding their Tuesday diesel promotion. She apologized that the one local station that I have been monitoring, which she says does participate in the program, did not discount their prices for last two Tuesdays.

I suspect this is not an uncommon occurance based on scanning Ultramar price trends. What are other members throughout Eastern Canada who frequent Ultramar to buy Diesel observing when they check prices for diesel on Tuesdays?

Gas_Buddy:

Please read my posts carefully. I have received a reply from my query to Ultramar customer service. The rep says that Ottawa stations do participate in the program. I can personally verify that that is not true over the last two weeks for this one station. I have gone back to the Ultramar rep with this information for an explanation.

Last week I asked at the station. The cashier believes that the price is adjusted automatically at midnight but doesn't know anything beyond that.

I have watched the trends on the OttawaGasPrices website for other Ultramar stations in the Ottawa area and see no evidence that price is down 2 cents on the last two Tuesdays.

I have no intention of driving all over Ottawa looking for a 2 cent discount. I am looking for others that are familiar with Ultramar practices regarding Diesel pricing on Tuesdays to comment.

We go back to the simple premise that not every Ultramar service station is required to participate in the program. Maybe what you need to do is check with each of stations individually. It seems you've personally checked one station; maybe you need to check more or all in your area to see who participates in the discount program.

Realize, of course, that you may end up using more money (in gas) than you'll save by buying at the lower price than if you simply bought closer to you (even if it is at a higher or non-discounted price).

Another Tuesday and still no reduction in price of diesel at Ottawa stations that I can detect and definitely not at a local one that I can personally check.

I heard back from the Ultramar rep who said that Ottawa stations do participate in the 2 cents reduction on diesel on Tuesday as do most Ontario stations.

I have reported back to him what I am seeing. Be interesting (maybe frustrating?) to hear what he has to say about that.

Very normal, indeed. As for that confused attendant. Can you get her phone number for me. I think I use to "date" her in high school. I'm out of jail now and would like to reconnect with her.

Supreme is 3 cents off today (Thursday) at my local station. Seems that this promotion is real. Question is what's going on with Diesel on Tuesdays. I have yet to hear from Ultramar head office.

Thanks for your comment. Yes Ultramar still claims they have a discount on Supreme. It is on Thursdays, but only 3 cents (not 5) now. I will take a look at their supreme price tomorrow at my local station and see if they are following through.

Gas Buddy:

Ultramar is an Eastern Canada company. It has 800 stations in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland. Why should I post in Ontario discussion if I want to hear from members throughout Eastern Canada. If I post in the General Gas talk category and a member has nothing to add because he lives in Maryland and hasn't heard of Ultramar then he doesn't need to read or reply.

As for your convoluted argument about the price not changing because maybe there was a concurrent and increase. That would be convenient for Ultramar but hard for a reasonable person to swallow. Even harder to swallow if the price didn't then go up on Wednesday (which it didn't)

I have asked the company (haven't got a reply yet). I am looking for others in Eastern Canada (i.e. not you) to provide their impression on how the promotion really works based on what they have observed.

Armby:

"...Ultramar is not just an Ottawa company. It operates across Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, with a significant presence in Ontario.

The diesel promotion applies across their network, not just in Ottawa. Yes only at participating stations..."

All the more reason to post it in the Ontario discussion category, where people familiar with the stations' promotions can answer your question about the promtion at the stations in your area.

As for "...but the local cashier did not claim that they did not participate. To the contrary she tired to convince me it had been applied."

Assuming that the local cashier isn't the one determining if prices will raise or lower, for all we know, based on what she reportedly said about prices changing automatically at midnight, maybe (as far as she knew), a regular or expected increase didn't take place (and the price, by lowering 2 cents, didn't change from what you saw posted. I don't know. But the other thing can simply be no one's asked her about the station participating in the program and she gave the best answer she could to the best of her knowledge.

Maybe the simple answer is to contact the company directly and ask which local stations participate in the program?

Ultramar does have a 2 cent discount on Tuesdays...they used to have 5 cents off premium on Thursdays, but not sure if that's still in effect or not. If premium is one or two cents above mid-grade, then it's discounted.

To Gas Buddy: First, Ultramar is not just an Ottawa company. It operates across Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, with a significant presence in Ontario.

The diesel promotion applies across their network, not just in Ottawa. Yes only at participating stations, but the local cashier did not claim that they did not participate. To the contrary she tired to convince me it had been applied.

I want to get comments from others about the Ultramar diesel promotion actually works throughout their network of stations. I can't generalize about pricing across all Ultramar stations but can about a specific local station. I only want to report the specific facts I know about.

I leave it as an exercise to others besides yourself what I meant by "is this normal behaviour" I would think most would understand the question.

First, you're posting this topic in the General Gas Talk discussion category where it's being read by Gas Buddy members across the United States and Canada, most of whom have probably never heard of Kanata, Ontario, let alone are familiar with one isolated gas Ultrmar gas station in Kanata.

You will get better responses to a local question if you ask it in the Ottawa discussion category, where local Gas Buddy members can better answer your question.

That said, the ultramar website,
Ultramar Diesel Tuesdays
clearly indicates that there is "diesel Tuesday" and that the discount is only at participating stations. That means, simply, that not every Ultramar station has to provide the discount.

You wrote:

Is what "normal behaviour"? That you just found out about it? Or that not every Ultramar station offers, nor has to offer, a Tuesday discount on diesel fuel (just as not every Ultramar station has to offer a discounted price on Thursday if you buy premium fuel.

As for "it doesn't look like their prices are any lower than at other stations", why should they be lower? Are you saying that they're supposed to be lower, or have to be lower? The discount, if the specific Ultramar station is participating in the discount program, simply means the price is discounted from their regular mark-up; it doesn't necessarily mean that the Ultramar price is lower than any other gas station.
