Does anybody out there remember driving into a gas station & hearing that bell ring & watching the guy running out to fill up your car?

Yep, back when Full Service was the only service available, though I suspect it may still be quite common in New Jersey or Oregon.

Long time ago, My uncle took us up the mississippi fishing, and he stopped at an oil gas station. I thought it was the neatest thing I ever heard, my parents didn't drive until I was 16.

Yes, I most certainly do as I worked in an ARCO (Atlantic Richfield) station for sixteen months (1968 - 1969). I also worked as a young mechanic, so it was my job to stop what I was doing to service a customer at the pump when that bell rang. Back then, if an individual bought 8 gallons of fuel, he got his windshield cleaned (weather permitting) and his oil checked or, if you forgot to do so (I never did), the purchase was free!

MertieMan brought up some of the free items given. We also gave S&H green stamps, red balls for the antenna and fish derby scratch off cards. We also sold dinnerware so our back room was filled with cases of motor oil and dishes. Ah, memories :-) !

I used to be the kid that ran to fill up the tank at the sound of the bell. Checked the oil and tire pressure, then cleaned the windshield.

Sure do...
I also remember the little glass globe at the top of the pump with a ball(s) in it to show that the gas was flowing too.

And of course the pumps had mechanical digit displays too. The maximum price per gallon was 99.9 cents since there were no digits for gas over a dollar.

yes, some stations in my area still have this!

speedy, that's not the case... maybe they saw your out-of-state license and just wants to make sure you have enough oil in your engine

Yes, many years ago this was common. Nowdays, I can only think of one station in the vicinity that offers full service. Ofcourse I didn't trust them back then and I definitely don't trust the ones in NJ when they offer more than to just pump your gas.
