If you are holding the handle, you ARE grounded. If you use the "lock" to let the nozzle fill your car until it shuts off, then you are not grounded, but as long as you don't use a cell phone or other electronic device, you should be ok. If you are, just make sure you touch the vehicle away from the immediate vicinity of the nozzle before touching the nozzle to avoid a static discharge. There is video of the catastrophic effect of doing this.. just Google "Cell phone gas station fire"...

(winter mainly) When I get out of my car sometimes just touching the door handle I get zaped! and it concerns me.
