To discharge static electricity. And do you use the Gas pump nozzle holding device? I personally don't use the holding device even when filling to a full tank. When dispensing fuel I apply continual force to the nozzle lever for the time it takes to dispense the gasoline, which can be several minutes. By pumping this way this eliminates the risk of creating a static charge from rubbing your hands on your clothes.

LOL. Really? Ground yourself? If you are holding the handle, you ARE grounded. If you use the "lock" to let the nozzle fill your car until it shuts off, then you are not grounded, but as long as you don't use a cell phone or other electronic device, you should be ok. If you are, just make sure you touch the vehicle away from the immediate vicinity of the nozzle before touching the nozzle to avoid a static discharge. There is video of the catastrophic effect of doing this.. just Google "Cell phone gas station fire"...

I consider myself to be well grounded most of the time.

Not purposely, as the humidity is usually 50, 60 or more most days anyway

The humidity in my area keeps static electricity at a minimum, so for me the answer is no.

No holding device here, and static electricity is a problem. (winter mainly) When I get out of my car sometimes just touching the door handle I get zaped! and it concerns me.

I'm usually on the ground when I check the pump price. Then I pick myself up and fill up the beast.
