.. Guess we have to wait again for $2.50... GasBuddy sent out emails today predicting a 30c increase... and we've gone up 3c already... probably just because people are expecting it now...

. Down another penny to $2.75... we didn't make $2.50 by election day with all the disasters to use as excuses to re-raise the price, but it's starting to look doable now...

markets are markets and no matter how many fox news morons claim that presidents can control the price of gas, it simply isn't true. the can inspire an increase in domestic oil production, and thankfully Obama has done just that.

.. Gas back down to $2.89 here now... maybe if the oil companies can't find any more hokey excuses for raising the price, we'll actually achieve $2.50... or lower...
.. Although some below falsely claimed Pres. Obama wants gas $8-$9/gallon like Europe, the commission he appointed to investigate prices and oil companies back in April seems to be having an effect now and keeping prices down... Pres. Obama wanted to know why so many refineries were 'shut down for repairs' (driving gas price up) when there wasn't really anything wrong with them...

Forget for a moment that prices dropped considerably until and after the 2008 election because of a terrible world-wide economy, and forget for a moment that prices started to rise in the beginning of the year as the economy started to level off and improve somewhat, because that apparently has nothing to do with price changes (price changes which were world-wide, not just in the United States).

.. Summer 2008 was $5/gallon here, mid $2's by election day Nov. 2008, had momentum carrying it on down into $1.80's by January... then started soaring back up as oil companies recouped lost profits... REPLIES (newest first) First 123 Next Last

Thank you for an insightful and intelligently written post. I may disagree, even frequently, with BuzzLOL, but at least he writes intelligently.
BuzzLOL wrote: "Post election increases seem to have leveled off now, seeing a slight tendency toward dropping again... hope so... BUT, with Thanksgiving Day so close, will prolly mostly stay about the same... or increase soon..."
I can't speak for Toledo but where I've been recently (the northern Florida area), prices didn't increase after the election but continued to drop for another day or two. I can't see any reason why "...with Thanksgiving Day so close...[prices will] increase soon..." You haven't provided any reason why that might happen other than there's a holiday coming. And considering that there were no price increases for this past three day holiday weekend, there's no reason to expect an increase simply because of a holiday. Not, at least, in my opinion.
RallyeRed wrote: "Many stations in my areas of Cleveland were at levels as low as 3.15 on election day - the next day 3.49 appears."
I can't speak for all of Cleveland (where I'm seeing family in the Euclid area) but there are plenty of gas stations selling regular gas in the low to mid $3.20s, including at least two I passed that were $3.21 a gallon. Are you saying that all the prices in Cleveland rose to $3.49 or higher, or just at an isolated station, for which you're providing no additional information for us to have an understanding?
BuzzLOL wrote: ".. With the elections over, the push to get gas back down into the $2's seems to have ended... we've been stuck at $3.19 as our lowest price for the past week now..."
I don't know who was making the "push" to get gas into the $2s, if anyone, but I agree that yes there are Toledo stations as high as $3.59, but most are in the $3.30s range from what I've seen.
As for "... apparently are trying to make their money on booze and snacks...of course, most people buy their booze and snacks at the station they've already stopped at for lowest priced gas."
I agree that stations try to make their money on in-store items, if for no other reason than fuel is probably the least profitable item the station sells. That said, most people on Gas Buddy say that they pay at the pump so that they don't have to go into the store, and many others on Gas Buddy say that they (and we should too) "boycott" buying things in the store because they're expensive. I doubt that many Toledo people go to gas stations to buy snacks and "booze" without buying gas. But that's just my opinion. Maybe gas stations in Toledo do "booze and snacks without gas sales" more than in other locations.

.. With the elections over, the push to get gas back down into the $2's seems to have ended... we've been stuck at $3.19 as our lowest price for the past week now... that price is at three local stations... other stations around here are charging as much as $3.59 and don't seem to mind so far that they have few to no customers... apparently are trying to make their money on booze and snacks... of course, most people buy their booze and snacks at the station they've already stopped at for lowest priced gas...

Forgetting that the 2008 price drops were the result of world-wide economic issues, rather than U.S. politics, it seems that this topic has now passed it's point of interest (the 2012 U.S. elections) and can be closed.

there was a collapse into a great recession that started that 2008 slump to nearly a $1.38 (in dallas) ,then went back up from there BUT maybe the election had something to do with "part" of that fall ,but it fell way FASTER and DEEPER than the one of today , big difference 2008 to 2012
