For me it was about 4 weeks ago, a gentleman carrying a gas can asked me if I could spare some Gas. All I could spare was maybe a half a gallon, because I was only pumping 10 bucks of gas myself. It's getting so bad that people can't afford Gasoline anymore.

I've given people rides to the station to fill the gas can and taken them back to their vehicle, especially if I see someone walking in the winter in Maine and had passed a dead vehicle already, I give them a ride to the station. There they can probably get a ride back if I don't have the time to take them myself.

Today 2 kids pushed their car into the gas station when I was filling up and asked for 2 bucks to get enough gas to get home where they could get some money to fill up. If they were trying to con me they sure went a long way to do it. I gave them $2.

There was a lady in her 30's standing there panhandling. It was strange, because she had a different (semi-dirty) outfit on each day of the week. (Wasn't there on the weekends - no heavy traffic flow)

Bums will occasionally show up at various places, all with the same tale that they are from out of town with 3 children, no food and no way to get back home and that they need some gas. Its usually the same ones all of the time.

He came up to me and said his rental van was out of gas. I declined to give him anything because his van was RUNNING and not even parked at a pump. Think again! A common scam is the "traveler in distress" story. Professional beggars will do this, often with a female and child or two. They come up to you, with a heart-breaking story about having to get to a distant city for some important need. "We have to drive to "X" right now to see our baby's specialist, she's very sick..." "Can you PLEASE help us buy gas? We need $50 to get there, but anything will help!" I usually turn them away, because it's always contrived. At most I would tell them to pull up to the pump and I might put in $5 or 10 for them. They never do! You'll get this scam at bus and train stations, too.

I had encounters with many homeless veterans. I got some insight into what puts them in that circumstance. It may be their fault and it may not be. Drugs and alcohol cause a lot of it but sometimes it is just bad luck. So when I see someone asking for money to eat or for gas or whatever I try to give them something. I am not rich and I know I get stung sometimes but in the long run that $5 or $10 isn't going to change my life. But you know it might just help change that person's life on the side of the road.

The guy said his wife (in the car) was pregnant and he had to go several miles to a relative's place. I helped them out. I also give to homeless people at traffic stops. Can't help it.
