On the date that the original post joined, prices were increasing all day long in CA. I drove by a particular intersection at least 10 times that day. The last two times the price had stabilized -- every other trip by that gas station the price had increased. The crazy ride continued, though less rapidly, over the next several days. Prices are not typically that volatile.

Your first mistake is to make a road trip to get cheap gas. How much did that trip cost you and was it more than you would have saved?

This is only a local forum topic at best, rookie.

People:
The member writing the original post started the topic in October; he's still has only 270 points. He's not participating in the discussion or in Gas Buddy activities. And, the topic was inactive for four months until a member wrote the insightful "yes that happens" to reactivate the topic.
There's no reason to continue discussing the issue with him. He's not here. The issue obviously wasn't that important.

I don't know how far you had to drive, but even if the price was a few cents cheaper its probably not worth burning the gas to get there

chatkath - Welcome to the forums.
Even though the particulars you posted might be local, the general question you pose is relevant to all of us, I believe. Some station owners post their own prices, but most come from people driving around like you and me (so it's not false advertising per se). Yes, I too have had the bad experience of trying to go to the lowest price only to have it not be so (I used GB for years before becoming a member, so that's where the bulk of my experience comes from). Not knowing this isn't being "stupid" (Yes, 1OILMAN, I'm talking to you); it's simply being new and getting the hang of how this all works.
I think there are very few malicious false posters on GB, and they usually get their comeuppance; but anybody can hit a "2" when they mean to hit the "3" or accidentally post on the wrong station, so there can be honest mistakes. Also, look at the age of the price. If it's more than 12 hours old, or more than a few hours old during a large price swing, it can be simply out-of-date.
Where you can make a difference is to keep posting up-to-date and accurate prices, especially when you encounter ones that are egregiously wrong like this one. If you think it's a malicious or careless posting, let a moderator or a local senior member know.

People post wrong prices around here all the time. Don't always trust an extremely low price from this community.

Here is a place to use the GasBuddy app on your smartphone.
It is the best way to have the most up-to-date prices at all times.
I enter probably up to 30-40 prices per day. I know you only get credit for 5, but that's not why we're here, right?
I enter just about every station I pass wherever I am and whatever time of day. If my kids are in the car they fight to be the GasBuddy of the day!
Use the app. It will have the most up-to-date price and show how old the price is, as well.

Hello chatkath. I do feel badly for you. I tried to dissect your Topic and reviewed the various posts. You state you went to this Shell station due to a "false ad". If the "ad" was a roadside sign, then the error was probably duplicated by a dedicated gas buddy and posted here incorrectly, as well. Did a Gas Buddy make the error (it does happen to any of us) or did the owner or employee post erroneous signs? In either case or both, you were misled. I am sorry that it happened to you :-(. MGY
Perhaps this would be a good place to recommend driving up to the pump to record prices, rather than road signs. I do that in my locale, but honestly have never encountered a difference in pricing, only a lack of two grades and non-ethanol being posted.

The owner don't have anything to do with the prices posted here - no wonder he looked at you like you were crazy --

Pithy: The reason you appear to be a serial topic killer is because it takes you weeeeks to think of your witty replies. By then the topic has died on its own volition. You bumping a topic that hasn't been posted to in a week or more, doesn't make you a topic killer, just an amusing annoyance. No offense intended.

1OILMAN, yes I've heard of that saying but I never repeat it. It sounds very pornographic to me.

This should be posted in Calif forum, but I will share one thing with you that I observed yesterday. A local station was super cheap compared to everyone else in town and it was spreading by word of mouth and gas buddy. The boss/owner had not been in to update the prices. It went from 4.13 to 4.35 when the boss got there. So it's not always Bogus!

You know what would really suck? If the station closest to him had raised their price higher by the time he got back. You know, sometimes life is tough. Its even tougher when you are stupid.

Lol, maybe the price went up before you got there. The price in California is going up by the minute!
