Does anybody out there besides me think there should be air hoses beside all the gas pumps like there used to be? The costs could be included with the gas price.

Some stations charge a quarter, but will provide tokens to paying customers.

It is nice to have free air, but whether they charge or not I always use my own air gauge. I see the newer stations putting the air away from the pumps so the pump lanes don't get held up by people checking their tires.

I have stopped going for air when I fill up with gas. I now go get my tires checked and filled when required where I purchased my tires. This is a free service which also included free flat repair even if you purchased your tires elswhere.

Our local Mobile Station has free air but that's the only one near by that I know of. I definitely think they should all have free air like it use to be.

Air hoses at the gas pumps went away when service stations doing mechanical work who had large air compressors went away. Tires should be checked and air pressure adjusted when cold, meaning before the car is started and driven.

Just make a one time small investment for your garage and buy an air compressor. I would much rather check my tires and fill them up in the privacy of my own home. I don't want to be sitting out in some station parking lot with nosy people gawking at me. An air compressor is very handy for many other things in addition to filling your tires.

You're right, cnygas, they do have costs to provide those services. If they charged a dime for the air, that would sound about right. Over the life of the equipment, they'd recover their costs and make a profit. The actual "raw material" used to make the, err, product, air, is free to all.

I think that relatively nominal cost is why stations used to offer it free. But somebody decided they could make money charging a quarter, then the quarter became a half dollar, then 75¢ and some are now charging a buck. Those higher prices make people feel like they're being gouged -- because the are -- and destroys customer loyalty.

In Columbus, we have a thread where we track places that offer free air. The number dwindled to about a half dozen or less until almost 2 years ago.

That's when GetGo, an affiliate of the Giant Eagle grocery chain, started offering free air at all of its Columbus stations. Here's a picture of what the stations look like.

To all those people saying "free water and air", there is no such thing has free, you will pay for it one way or the other. For the air pump the station has the pay for the compressor, the power to the compressor, and maintenance to the compressor. You pay a water bill, so do businesses. Nothing is free.

They should be, but around here each station has a single unit (dual air/water) stand...free.

I went to get air today, they were charging $1.00. Supposedly it went to a charity of some kind but I wasn't going to spend a dollar. I have a air pump in my car but the station would have been easier/quicker. Not worth a dollar to me. Fifty cents, I would have helped out the charity, a buck I will do it myself when I get home.

I never saw air hoses next to the tanks but do remember free air. I remember comedian Rich Hall handing out bags of "free air" to people at gas stations.

Not at the pumps and since I don't get air that often I do not like the idea of including it in the price. I always try to carry 50 cents in-case I need to get air.

No I don't agree with having an air hose at every pump. The gas station owner would need to increase gas prices (or hotdogs, coffee, etc. if it has a convienence store) to recoup the cost of the installation.

Having just one air hose nearby the pumps is good enough. I typically don't see a long line of people waiting to get free air for their tires. It's not cost effective for the customers and the gas station owner.

I get my tires checked and filled at my tire store every week or so, done free as a service to induce me to purchase another set of tires from them.

I only have to drive in and they do the rest.

You're telling your age now. I do wish the air was by the pump even if you have to pay for it. We would not be paying for it now if punks would not have cut the hoses time after time. Here there are some stations that have free air, some you have to pay but no station has it by the pump. The good ole days...

It is not a thing of the past. The Gas Buddy web will help you find gas stations that have free air. The stations I know of have their air hose at the building not at the pump. They may have felt why have a free service (the air hose) stop a paying customer from getting to the gas pump.

I think free air at the gas stations is a thing of the past. No I do not want it included in the price of gas. It is high enough already. It costs $.50 in this area for air. I use it every 3 or 4 months where as I fill up every 2 to 3 weeks.

I think it should be available free of charge but not at the pump, it should be off to the side as to not tie up the pumps.

I use my bicycle pump to top off my tires if they are low. After the car has been sitting in the driveway for hours. Else I use Hess. But once you drive, you are no longer measuring cold air pressure.

Gas prices have to many added costs alredy. The station should give free air and water as a get u in.

The only stations I post prices from are the low priced ones around here. I don't see any reason to post the prices from stations that are more than $.10 above the lowest ones in my area.

I wish they were there, but I don't think they will come back. Especially when they charge $1.00 to $2.00 for a few minuets of air.
