I love to stay away from gas stations, & quite often gas up with only 1 or 2 gallons remaining. For several years, I would take extra five gallons of gas into Oregon, so I could drive 700 miles & get back to Washington state, which had lower gas prices. Once I traveled 40 miles on "empty". Sure I could reach the next town, I traveled 60 miles on "empty", finally filling with 9.8 gallons with my verified 10 gallon tank. Did I say I like to stay away from gas stations? Think an electric car may be in my future.

I refill as soon as it drops below a half tank. You never know in the Bay Area when the next big earthquake will take us off the grid for a week.

I normally wait until I get my fuel light on, then I have roughly about 4 gallons (~50 miles) until actually empty. I never go any lower than that, every time it's on or getting close to it, I'm always en-route to a station.

1/4 tank summer 1/2 or higher in the winter time. If i'm out in the winter and see a low price I will fill up again just to keep it topped off.

Around 1/4 of a tank. Will risk it if I feel I can get away with it, but otherwise the rule is strict.
