Apparently, modern oil formulas don't require you to change oil viscosity during hot and cold months. Moreover, synthetic oils are only required if you abuse your vehicle (towing, extreme abuse, stop-n-go traffic).

Actually, back in the day you would use lighter oil in the winter when it was cold and became "thicker", not the summer. However, now with the multi weight oils, it is not necessary.
