Apparently, modern oil formulas don't require you to change oil viscosity during hot and cold months. Moreover, synthetic oils are only required if you abuse your vehicle (towing, extreme abuse, stop-n-go traffic).

My new Jeep uses 5w20. It doesn't get much lighter than that.

lately, w/ these newer vehicles, they only need 5W20 or 5W30 all year long

i use 10W30 on my older vehicles though

Hmmm..
Never heard of "anyone" changing to a lighter oil in the summer.

Old school was lighter in the winter (20 or 10 wt.)
Heavier in the summer (30 or 40 wt.)

All newer vehicles usually have a recommendation for year round use based on your climate.

As far as Conventional oil vs. Synthetic... well that's been argued time and time again.
