do you ever suspect others of copying gas prices off the site to get their points?

Yep. Although today I pulled in to one station and apparently made a boo-boo putting in a midgrade cash price, and rather than someone correcting the mistake over the next 8 hours, two or three different users just OK'd what I had put in. Sad.

It's gotten to the point that if I don't recognize the name on the price, I dismiss it as a false entry, especially for diesel or premium or midgrade. Those are the most-ignored prices. If I pull in to a station and actually copy all the prices off the pump (and not just the one on the sign), those midgrade, premium and often diesel prices will stay current in GasBuddy for up to a WEEK even as the regular is updated with the right price, because people will just OK any old damn thing that's in the field. It's so frustrating.

We have a user here in Spokane that is posting bogus prices. Reported "IT" to Gasbuddy. We appear to follow a similar route to and from work and I can drive by a station "IT" has posted at less than 5 minutes before and the price is grossly wrong. There's no way a station could change their prices that fast.

"IT" also seems to post prices from stations no where near "IT"'s actual location at the time.

For sure. I'm new but have noticed how many times prices are updated in a day and they haven't even changed . Today I updated one and it was updated by someone else to a lower price and it didn't even go down?

@drgeeforce, station owners trying to route people to their station may happen, but that user isn't going to have the noticeable activity level of the price parrots we were speaking of. With bogus activity just to garner points, one would think they should be five and done.

The parrot I noticed in my area routinely posts prices at stations that encompass the better part of two counties. If done legit, I couldn't even offer a guess on the total area wide travel time, considering they usually update all prices at each station. A quick no stop trip would be over an hour and that doesn't really account for traffic/traffic lights/etc...

Based on the new "Hyperlocal Leaderboards" on the mobile app, one of the parrots has many many times the activity level as a typical Gas Buddy user from the same area.

@CrackedLCD, there are at least two reasons why false prices appear on GB. 1)is increased traffic to their station. and 2) is for the points to get the free gas card.
I used to go a little out of my way to get the lowest price on GB but soon learned that some station owners posted fake prices to get more traffic to their stations. They figure that since the driver is there, they will get some gas anyways, especially if they're low on fuel. GB has a contest/raffle where posting prices earns you points to get tickets to enter the gas card giveaway. The more points you get, the more tickets you can get.

I always post only the prices I see, either on the pump or sign. I've seen posts that are so wrong, you know they didn't see it, like more than 50 cents different than the average.

lyons_coop, that's pretty funny. I'd probably do the same thing to just to annoy the narcissist!

I almost exclusively buy diesel, and since it's not reported as often as regular unleaded, I've pretty much learned which prices are likely to be right and which aren't in my area, so Gas Buddy doesn't really help me that much because the information's often old or made up. But I do like to correct and update stuff even well past the 5 stations that earn points.

It just boggles my mind why someone would make up stuff for dozens of places when it does them no real good.
