The government doesn't need to do that, but from personal experience, I know that driving 55 does greatly increase fuel economy!

Out here in the west it would take forever to get anywhere at 55. No gas storage at the moment.

They do that in the cities and on construction sites. I think that the government has its hand in too much stuff already.

Might be better to raise limits to what folks actually travel and most areas enforce.

Absolutely NOT. This will save that much gas plus it would be very dangerous for the motoring public .

PHUCK NO!! Look at all the data. There were more crashes and deaths because of the slow limits. Why do you think most states are RAISING they're speed limits. I remember back in the day most limits were 80MPH. Now it's slowly creeping back up to that. Only a hand full of localities are doing it. But the thinking is finally catching on again to have higher speed limits. Most of Montana is a NON posted limits, except for the truck drivers (65mph). Meaning you can get away with 150 MPH depending on how the cop feels, road conditions, traffic..etc

Don't see it happening.

All everyone did was bitch about it and seek out ways to get around it.
I know of people who made a point of avoiding the expressways so they could speed at 65-75 MPH.
I'm pretty sure it turned the Trucking industry into the rabid right-wing force that it is today, since truckers were directly affected by the speed limits (Imagine watching your official wages dropping over 20% during a period of high inflation).
Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that a lot of the anti government/corporation worship that America seems to take pride in started with this.
I've also heard that this helped Japanese car companies establish themselves here, since American car companies were designing everything with the idea that one could only go 55MPH on the freeways – something nobody else was doing.

So no, I don't see it happening. It's more likely that car sales will drop off to the point where they won't be built to handle 80-90 MPH stretches on I-10 in Texas.
