There are at least 15 stations in St Louis area under $2.00 a gallon.
How low can it go? And what will it do to the economy?

brerrabbitTX--

Wrong again.
EVERY station on the low price board for my city(cincygasprices.com) alone is below 2.20. There are more for sure. It only lists the lowest 20.

So, are they ALL selling at at least a 12-cent loss? Or, are your numbers wrong? You can't have it both ways.
Your argument holds no water(or gasoline, in this case). Any other arguments I can shoot down for you?

BTW - There are two stations in West Union Ohio currently selling for 1.85. Are they taking a 47-cent per gallon loss??

"It's called a "loss leader"."And this is the biggest myth that has ever been perpetrated in the gasoline business.

There is no liquidly traded spot price in Ohio. You have to use Chicago and transport that to Ohio.

The rack price at Cincinnati today is 1.67 so dealers can buy at that plus trucking to the site or about 4 cents a gallon so that is 1.71 plus fuel taxes which makes the cost at the site at an absolute minimum of $2.17 Dealers need about 15 cents a gallon minimum so that would be 2.32 a gallon. You can get upset at pricing above that but even at 2.17 cost with no profit there is no lose leader willing to take a 9 cents a gallon hit.

And I really don't care how long you have lived there and how the chain works because Ohio is my area and I have worked in the industry for 33 years and have access to tons of data and pricing strategy as well as how the market works. I know what costs are, I don't have to depend on spot price postings.

And actually, YES, sometimes stations DO sell gas at a (slight) loss, to get you inside, where they make their REAL money: on soda and snacks. Their choice.

It's called a "loss leader".

And zero profit for anyone in the food chain. Yes that will work great. In whatever business you work in does your company do what it does for zero profit?

Please, recheck your math. Here:

$1.4064 x .9 = 1.26576 (since gas is 90% "gas" and 10% ethanol)
$2.05 x.1 = .205
TOTAL ------- $1.47076
PLUS taxes =$1.93476

Not sure where you get $2.129, but you're just wrong. You're using 100% gas PLUS 10% ethanol. You can't have 110%, silly.

Again, I've lived here 40 years. I know how the chains work here, you don't.

Looked it up here on the Gas Buddy site state taxes in Ohio for fuel are 28 cents a gallon, federal s 18.4. Total tax 46.4. Spot plus ethanol is 1.665, so spot plus tax alone is 2.129 with no transport to the terminal, no fee for terminaling and blending the ethanol and additive, no fee for the trucks to haul product to the sites and no profit for the dealer. Even given those assumptions you think the price should be 6.9 cents cheaper than that.

Not very realistic expectations.

brerrabbitTX

--Actually, NO.

$1.46(actually 1.40 - spot dropped another 6 cents today) x.9, or 90%, as you stated, = $1.314 add that to .205( $2.05 x .1, or 10%, as you stated) and you get $1.519(not $1.66 - you failed basic math today).

Add the 60 cents, which is the HISTORICAL, spike-triggering spread in Ohio(I've lived here all my life - I know), and you get $2.119. I was off by 6 cents, NOT 34, as you would imply. And that 6 cents was taken out anyway by today's drop, so, we're back at 2.059. $2.40? That's madness.

Down, but slowly. Spot price was 1.46 as of Friday for the Great Lakes region. That SHOULD translate to the lower-end prices being under $2. Unfortunately, GREEDway is holding prices up. Current average is 2.40, when it should be about 2.06.

The price is 1.46 for the gas or 90% of what you buy. 10% of what you buy is 2.05 a gallon. (That's what the ethanol costs) So a gallon at spot costs 1.665,( 1.46 for gas plus 20.5 for ethanol) That is the price at the spot location. So it still takes pipeline transportation to get it to the terminal, the terminal has to collect something for their efforts, a truck has to pick it up and take it to the station and they need a little profit. Then you add the taxes and in your area its like 50 to 60 cents a gallon so $2.40 seems about right.
