Backus Shell..full-service station.
Northwest Highway and Ferndale Road.http://www.dallasnews.com/news/columnists/steve-blow/text deleted

Fill ’er up with farewell tears: Lake Highlands loses its full-service gas station.

"The Backus family has owned the Shell station at the corner of Northwest Highway and Ferndale Road since 1962. It’s one of Dallas’ last full-service stations. Gas was 39 cents a gallon when the business opened."
Steve Blow.

"I don’t think of gas stations as a place to make you weepy. But saying farewell to a favorite station? Apparently that will do the trick.

Disbelieving customers are still stopping by a Lake Highlands gas station that closed Saturday after 53 years as a family-run business.

And with the sale of the Backus Shell site at Northwest Highway and Ferndale Road, Dallas has also lost one of its last full-service stations.

“A lot of people don’t even know what that is anymore,” owner Darren Backus told me, taking a break from packing up. “They’d pull up to the full-service pumps, see the higher prices and just get mad.”

Darren, 55, literally grew up at the station from age 2. He began working there at 10. “I cleaned the restrooms and picked up around. I probably got in the way more than anything,” he said.

His parents, Wayne and Margie Backus, opened the place in March 1962. They can’t agree on the exact date.

“I know Dallas got a big snow on the day we opened,” said Margie, who finally retired after 51 years at the station.

“She’s the real unsung hero of this place,” Darren said. “Mom kept the books and ran the office. She worked here longer than Dad or I did.”

Gas was 39 cents a gallon at the start but would drop to 29 cents during a gas war.

And every pump was full service in those days. For your 29 cents, you got your oil checked, tires aired, windows cleaned and floors vacuumed.

The Backus station also remained full service in the sense that it offered car repair, oil changes, tire sales, inspections and service calls.

Trust and personal service really bonded the station with the Lake Highlands community and beyond.

Janie Bowe, a customer of 33 years, stopped by the closed station Monday just to say goodbye to Darren and his crew of five.

“We’re going to miss these guys so much. They’re just like family,” she said before emotion got the best of her.

“Ooh, I can’t even say it,” she whispered around the catch in her voice. “I don’t even know where I’m going to buy tires now.”

Later, tears welled in Darren’s eyes when he talked about what he’ll miss. “I’m going to miss my customers,” he said. “We had a lot of elderly people as customers. What I enjoyed most was helping them.”

The station was known for the spiffy, red-and-white ’55 Chevy parked out front for the last 23 years.

Darren’s uncle had rebuilt it. And when the Texas lottery began in 1992, Darren got the idea of using the car as a promotion. Win the lottery with a ticket from the station and you win the car, too.

“We sold a ton of tickets, but it’s still here,” Darren said. “I plan on keeping it.”

But selling all those lottery tickets had an unexpected effect on Darren.

“I used to enjoy gambling a little. I’d go to Las Vegas once in a while,” he said. “But after seeing so many people buy Lotto tickets who couldn’t afford them, I don’t enjoy gambling anymore. I just don’t do it.”

Developers have wanted to buy the prime corner location for years. With it getting harder and harder to make a profit, Darren finally sold.

“It was time. We held on about as long as we could,” he said. He will take a couple of months off but isn’t sure what comes next.

One person facing a big change is his mom. “Oh my gosh, I’ve got to learn to pump gas now,” Margie said with a laugh.

“I have never pumped a single gallon in my life. The men always did it for me,” she said. “Now I get the experience.”

we've got a gulf that keeps opening and closing, a shame, as it' the only we-pump-it on the island...
mobil and coastal in mid-Island replaced with bank and park...
new Valero had to sign a contract that if it ever folded, it would self-destruct rather than sitting around untended

Define area. In my six square mile community there are eight, all closed between 1978-1992. Three remain.
