My consecutive days keep getting zeroed out, even though I post every day.

Is there a reason for that?

Today for instance I am showing 2,225 points for the day, but 0 consecutive days. This has happened several times in past weeks.

Am I doing something wrong?

That is true! It's also not usually a time when I'm even thinking about GB, much less able to visit the site. I'll try to think to at least click on some articles in the mornings for a while though. And check points late at night to be sure they "stuck."

Happily, I can now report things have finally been fixed. Got a nice personal response from mod Jess. Thank you, Jess!

Middle of the day is anything not w/in an hour of the time change. ;-)
Just trying to save you some grief, until they address things like servers. But, there will always be burps and you are more at risk at the "magic" hour of day change.

Yes, they should respond to emails...better yet, not be making changes on a "finely aged" system w/out more communication and more testing - and maybe not making changes that might cause harm to a "finely aged" system until they have the staff in place and trained to handle such changes....

See CC's response in this thread.

"I think there are sometimes server burps where your posts might be recorded on the wrong time zone and not qualify if late/early in the day."

If there are "server burps" that are causing this problem (or sun spots or whatever they want to blame it on), then they need to respond when notified that there's a problem. I've sent multiple messages over the past week and got one canned response on day 2 stating the problems had been fixed. Obviously they haven't.

"Just a thought - try to at least do the read a news item once during the middle of the day whenever possible."

Thanks, but I'm typically at work in the middle of the day. GasBuddy is the last thing on my mind when I'm working!

I should be able to post prices at 11:55 p.m. or 12:05 a.m. without having to worry about "server burps."

Topcat - I understand that folks have had problems with points sticking/counting when logging in very early or very late. I think there are sometimes server burps where your posts might be recorded on the wrong time zone and not qualify if late/early in the day. Just a thought - try to at least do the read a news item once during the middle of the day whenever possible.

Also, there were problems at the beginning of September with their latest bonus point roll out.

Me too, topcat57.
Just came back from vacation. Pretty sure I managed to find some gas station to report every day, but I've got no points from travel day when it started. (I think I remember entering prices while in the shuttle from the airport to the hotel.)
If it's "not a big deal" like everybody says, then I'll have to realize it's not a big deal, and not worry about it.

Thanks, Mustang. You see, the problem is I haven't missed a day in over 7 years. I have posted from a family member's hospital room, at home recovering from same-day surgery, on the road, and in the dark. It's part of my daily routine. Yet occasionally my points don't seem to "stick." Say, for example, I'm logged in, post prices from my FSL, click on the articles, and post comments, and see "Today's Points" increment accordingly, sometimes I'll go back later in the day or the next day only to find my consecutive days and most recent points gone. Just vanished. Not in my daily activity report or total. I've been here over 9 years and missed days several times during the first two years. No problem. You just start over. That's the rule. (I don't think there should ever be a reinstatement of consecutive days if you miss a day unless there were website issues.)

Sometimes I catch it the same day and repost, but if I've posted late at night, which I often do, there is no chance to redo. The latest example was a couple of days ago. I had achieved all 2225 points for the day one morning only to come home that night and refresh the page and see 2020 points. I'd lost only some points which is better than losing them all which is what has usually happened.

I posted everything around 1:00 a.m. on 9-3 only to log in on the evening of 9-4 to find them gone. So did a lot of other people that day, and it appears most of their issues have been corrected. I see today that my points for that day have been reinstated. My consecutive days have not.

The mods have reinstated my points/days on occasion, more than two times in fact, but it's never been because I missed a day. It's due to their website not working properly. I should not be penalized when the problem is not at my end. They could at least give people the courtesy of more than silence or a canned response such as I got Friday.

topcat57 it appears that they fixed most of them.I know that they will also restore your consecutive days 2 times if for some reason you miss a day which is why it's hard to believe they haven't responded to your simple request.Things have been swirling down the bowl here the last few years it seems priorities are not in order. The mods seem to respond to trivial things but important things like not being able to zero wrong prices, chronic wrong price posters & accuracy of info is a low or non priority. It's really a shame because prices & station info is what the site was created for & it can no longer be counted on to be accurate.

Thanks, but I'm not on social media. I've concluded they care more about raking in the Benjamins than fixing the problems with their site. I witnessed more points disappear today. Not all this time, but I had clicked on the articles and posted 5+ comments and 5 gas prices and reached the 2225-point mark around 8:30 this morning. I get back home tonight and refresh this page, and I had only 2020 points. I finally figured out I had lost the points for reading the articles and posting 4 of 5 comments.

This is getting old. Really, really old. I have been properly logged in every time this has happened. I learned early on not to try the mobile app as it wouldn't work for me. I should still be tied with two other members at 170 on the consecutive days list. Still no reply to my PM to the mods.

Did you try the gasbuddysupport email that was out on Facebook? I heard they were responding to those emails a bit more promptly. Or, if you FB, post out there. They seem to care more about social media...

Topcat57 has been trying to talk to the mods directly. So far the only response was on 9-5, a canned...

"Hello,

Thank you for sending in an email.

Sorry for the inconvenience. The bonus points and consecutive days have been corrected.

Thank you for your patience."

Nothing has been corrected with topcat57's issues, and topcat57's patience is wearing thin. Do they even read the emails they receive? I said nothing about any problem with bonus points. That was not the issue. The issue was receiving NO points and losing my consecutive day streak even though I posted on 9-3.

"There aren't any here in the talk about us section that I can find."

I guess they should rename it "Talk among yourselves so we won't have to listen to you!"

It should be obvious to the admins that the consecutive day counter is among the most important for many members. It takes a great deal of dedication to ensure that a daily streak stays alive for months and years.

Let's hope this latest glitch gets straightened out for everyone as soon as possible.

Back to the original subject, I received a response from a mod on Friday stating that points/consecutive days had been fixed. Well, obviously they haven't. After over 7 straight years of daily posting I'm at 3 days and missing 2225 points.

By the way, the day after my consecutive days/points disappeared, my 30-day rank was 299. How could you lose a whole day's worth of points and still be that high on the list?

Visiting here, usually just for a few minutes but when I have time I like to hang out and read the discussions, is part of my daily (usually nightly) routine. There are some wonderful folks here.

I've always said if I miss a day posting, no big deal, but I never know if my points are going to "stick" or not. I'll see "Today's Points" increment as I post occasionally to go back late that night or the next day and discover they're gone. It's as if I wasn't there when I know I was.

Not that anyone cares, but I'm getting very close to being done with this whole thing. Between constant "glitches" in the system to the same people being allowed to post bogus prices for months with no response from the mods (which means I don't know if prices in other parts of town or out of town are correct or not) to flippant canned answers like the last one I received from a mod... what's the point? For pete's sake, a dead person was kept at the top of the consecutive day board for ages!

It became obvious a long time ago that the focus of this site has shifted dramatically from recognition of the FREE labor thousands have provided to raking in the Benjamins by TPTB. The Memphis MSL would shrink dramatically if all the stations I entered were to disappear.

So I'm giving them a few more days to respond. Fix it and address the issue, and I'll continue to contribute. Ignore me, blow me off with a canned answer, or refuse to fix the problem, and I'll cash in my points on the way out. Never won a drawing of any kind in my life, so I wouldn't expect to here either, but I've got a whole bunch of entries saved up.

I think the best solution would be for GBO to eliminate the Top Spotter.

All in all, in the game of life, it really is insignificant. While I understand asking for clarification, the tone of gmarn's post was rather a major rant for a little thing like being top spotter.

"My opinion for a SOLUTION is this -
KEEP THE TOP SPOTTER WITH THE LONGEST NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE DAYS IN THE #1 POSITION (w 30 consecutive days) and the INCONSISTENT SPOTTER IN #2 POSITION (EVEN WHEN THEY ACHIEVE 30 CONSECUTIVE DAYS.) That way the top spotter w the longest consecutive days has incentive to keep on reporting the prices, and the #2 person continues to strive to become #1 spotter. Sounds REASONABLE to me!"

Look at it this way - they only count the rolling 30 days.
In the last 30 days rolling someone beat you on the metrics.
What exactly are the metrics is not published, and some think that is intentional to make folks try harder.
One of the metrics may be number of grades posted.
Also, if you both reported in the last 30 day rolling period but the other person posted earlier to make the 30 day, they got the tie breaker.

Think about it. How many stations are there where there might be more than one person reporting that station daily for 30 days? Maybe that poster posted both morning and night? Who knows, but I can imagine there are a lot of "variables" that they must have to use to break ties considering that across GBO land, there are probably many stations that are posted to daily for 30 days by more than one poster.

Think about it - now you have a challenge to work a little harder to regain that top spot, and when you get it back, the other person is now challenged to get it back. YOU don't OWN that spot. Sorry.

gmarn - The moderators rarely respond in these forums so you are pretty much wasting your time.

No, I don't know the specifics. All a moderator ever said was that it was based on a combination of number of days posted and number of grades of gasoline posted over the last 30 days. I seriously doubt you will get a better answer in this forum because the moderators have not shared any more information than just that.

So my comments weren't helpful, fine. Nobody here is likely to help you because none of us can reach your lofty standards and it is doubtful that anyone is willing to put up with your tude.

Respectfully - to Scrapheap

You missed the POINT! Gas Buddy's rules aren't clear and I'm only trying
to understand how this works.

The question was "why does the Top Spotter get demoted from Top Spotter
even with > 30 consecutive days than the new Top Spotter?"
I understand there are points involved, tie breakers, and all of this is computerized.
Your response to my questions implied you know the specifics of my situation ....
You don't!

Yeah maybe to you I'm taking this too seriously .... So be it.
AGAIN Scrapheap I'm only trying to understand and your comments weren't helpful

I asked for assistance in understanding and you respond with a snarky comment
Thanks for your "help" (not!)

So what is the problem? You reported that station more often than others did for 30 day rolling windows for 484 days.

gmarn wrote > Then 9 days ago (today is Friday 9/5/14) another spotter (mel_blunt) comes along and achieves 30 day consecutive status at Q Trip (LS Mo 64081) and I am "DEMOTED" to #2 place (even though I never missed reporting for > 275 days) ?!?!?

Okay, so there are tie breakers, among them are number of grades of fuel reported by each poster, and he won. Keep in mind that Top Spotter only looks at activity the last 30 days.

Don't you think you are taking this a bit too seriously?

Problem : Gas Buddy's UNFAIR treatment of TOP SPOTTERS in 64081 area w issue of "Consecutive Days"

Can someone explain to me why this might happen?!? I'm very frustrated with Gas Buddy right now and I need a different perspective!!
(Disclaimer: I know this is "just an app" meant for consumer assistance and for fun. And I'm referring to the use of the mobile Gas Buddy app, not reporting prices on a desk top)

I've reached out to GB moderators regarding this issue in the past w/o any satisfying answers received back to me, in fact the answers I've received were like they didn't "hear" my complaint and just glossed over it ( boo to gas buddy )
MODERATORS - You're ON NOTICE !!

PROBLEM:
I've been the top spotter at 7 local gas stations (64081) for quite awhile. One station HyVee for 514 days (but Gas Buddy counts my consecutive days at 309??)
Then 9 days ago (today is Friday 9/5/14) another spotter (mel_blunt) comes along and achieves 30 day consecutive status at Q Trip (LS Mo 64081) and I am "DEMOTED" to #2 place (even though I never missed reporting for > 275 days) ?!?!?
How DARE gas buddy!!! This Really ticks me off!!
(This exact same thing happened w this same person 3 days ago at Phillips 66 (64081) and I was demoted to #2 place even though I maintained 30 consecutive days...This is WRONG!!! erroneous on GB part!! Wrong Wrong Wrong on GB part!!

I'm consistent and accurate AND I EXPECT to have my efforts held at the correct status (#1 spotter by GB) !!

I've been keeping my own log and I record station, price, time of day price reported and I make sure my prices reported are "captured" on the app before I drive away from that station.
That's what's so frustrating...I'm doing ALL the correct reporting AND GB is not giving me credit where I should be #1 spotter!!

Is there a CORRECTIVE SOLUTION ??
So Can someone explain to me why a consistent spotter like me is demoted to #2 spotter JUST BECAUSE another (INconsistent) spotter achieves 30 day consecutive days??? I know this other reporter mel_blunt will miss a day here soon & I'll again be top spotter ....

My opinion for a SOLUTION is this -
KEEP THE TOP SPOTTER WITH THE LONGEST NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE DAYS IN THE #1 POSITION (w 30 consecutive days) and the INCONSISTENT SPOTTER IN #2 POSITION (EVEN WHEN THEY ACHIEVE 30 CONSECUTIVE DAYS.) That way the top spotter w the longest consecutive days has incentive to keep on reporting the prices, and the #2 person continues to strive to become #1 spotter. Sounds REASONABLE to me!

Let's stop the madness and maintain the top spotter in the rightful place, keeping the INconsistent spotter in the #2 spot !!

For those who will respond please don't respond with insulting or demeaning responses. I wish the GB moderators would take these comments seriously and respond back to me (and any others w the same problem) with a RESPONSE that makes intellectual sense, since I DO take this Gas Buddy spotter SERIOUSLY all the while having FUN!

I know GB is electronic and based on GPS.
I verify my prices BEFORE I move to the next gas station. Remember : Technology is NOT ALWAYS CORRECT!! Respectfully, gmarn (Missouri 64081 area)

Still no response from the mods and no fix here. I'm really getting tired of the glitches and slow responses. It took weeks, and in one case months, and numerous messages for them to address the past few issues (points, members posting bogus prices, etc.).

Mine haven't been reinstated yet, but I sent a message through the "Contact Us" page. I just resent a message through DMing. Looks like they have fixed most of the people who were above me though. The two people I was even with are back down to #171 from #141 earlier. Last time I checked I was at #173. I see my lines have disappeared now, too. They were there through the first few page clicks this morning.

It seems like it's been something almost every day recently. People not getting their bonus points, for example. I never seemed to have a problem with that, but about once or twice a year I'll post prices and see "Today's Points" increase accordingly only to go back later in the day or the next day and find they've vanished. When I've posted early in the day and discover it before midnight, I've just reposted the prices, but if the problem doesn't show up until the next day, bam. Points and lines gone.

I don't do this just to collect points. It's primarily to help myself and others find the cheapest gas prices. I began using the site the week the remains of Hurricane Katrina blew through Memphis and sent gas prices soaring. When the MSL was introduced, I spent hours entering and mapping stations, so I feel like I and many others have contributed a lot of free labor to this site. All the issues with points, days, etc. I sometimes wonder how reliable any of the information is. Only as reliable as the people who post it, of course, but I frequently see prices posted just a few minutes before I've driven past a station which were obviously wrong. Prices that had been the same for a week or more and had not changed in the meantime. Over the years I've deleted obviously fabricated prices which are usually posted by drive-by, one-shot wonders, but a year or so ago we had a red-car member who would inexplicably post fake prices every day, and it took months for the mods to finally do something about it.

The saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. Seems like more and more changes are being introduced to the site, and new problems are introduced almost every time. It's getting old.

For "chris85am," instead of the general "contact us" link at the bottom, you can directly email a Mod.

Near the top right of the page, click on the envelope icon next to "inbox," which takes you to a new page.
Then click on "create new message."
Select GB Moderator for recipient
For category, select "points/consecutive days"

Same here.
I haven't missed a day for close to 100 days but the consecutive days say 0.

It was kind of funny to see a bunch of you without speed lines.

I also lost my consective days today after 450 or so. My history clearly shows no lapse in last month or so. Looking at the number of posts here, there is obviously a problem today. I sent a message to moderator and hope they find and fix the problem. Past messages have always been responded to and resolved, eventually.

Well, I'm glad to see it's not just me. I posted my usual prices, etc. around 1:00 a.m. yesterday (9-3) and today my consecutive days have been reset to zero after over 7 years of daily posting! None of my points are showing my points history either. This isn't the first time this has happened, but my lines are still showing which hasn't happened in the past. You're right about it happening to a whole lot of other people, too. The last time I checked the consecutive day leaders list (sometime in the past week) I was 173. I check it about once a week, and I've been at 173 for about a month. Now the two people I was even with are still on the list, but they've moved up to 141. That's over 30 people who've dropped off the list in the past week!

A lot of people were complaining about not getting bonus points for posting gas prices. I haven't had any issues there (except for not receiving any points yesterday).

Phew, I'm still there.

Zim, I agree with you. Remember when we tried to get rid of the stripe business years ago, the same way we tired to get new cars that weren't all red? Neither worked.

This is the quick reply I got from a GB Mod who restored my consecutive day streak;

Hello,

Thank you for sending in an email.

I have updated your home consecutive days.

Thank you for your patience.

Regards,

GasBuddy is having a serious problem today with the consecutive day list. It looks like 12 of the top 50 dropped off the list today. And we all know that didn't really happen! It's a rare day when 1 of the top 50 get dropped from the list. So losing 12 in one day is preposterous!

Mine are gone as well. If you check your recent activity it clearly shows at least on my account that I have not missed a day but today I'm showing zero?? WTF? I emailed moderators but I've never once received a response on any email I've sent! Very frustrating!

I just went to the points history page and it clearly shows I posted yesterday and for weeks on end. I should have 3,984 consecutive days!
