Today, like I do every day, I checked my Today's Points to make sure I had gotten all available points. Used to say 975 and with the increase in points a full day's points is usually 1,225. I looked today and saw 2,225! I then noticed a box under the header that said Bonus Points! +2,000 or something like that. What are Bonus points and if I got 2,000 of them why was my day's total 2,225 and not 3,225?

Sorry, I failed to mention in the last post that notices of whiteboard and PM's also chime in on my phone and wind up in my inbox occasionally. Again, this has been negligible for me compared to the rest of the email I receive.

Not trying to sell anyone on receiving more email, just saying what my experience has been.

For what it's worth, the amount of email that comes from GasBuddy is minimal. I have my preferences set to allow all forms of communication with GasBuddy. The only mail that I have received lately are these few bonus point announcements and price hike alerts. I believe there were three promo announcements in all; two for the first and one for the second.

I do have an occasional email from the Google+ Android Beta group, but these have dwindled practically to nil and there have only been two or three in the last several months. Even when this was active, it amounted to very little.

Don't get me wrong, I dislike frivolous email and spam as much as the next guy, but GB mail has not been a problem for me over the last several years. If you don't mind the few extra promotion emails, and want to stay informed, then it might be advantageous to enable email.

For whatever reason, they definitely seem to be transitioning away from communication via the forum.

RG

P.S. I failed to mention that the bonus announcements wind up under "Promotions" but the price hike alerts do not.

I'm not complaining about anything. I was just stating how I have my preferences for communication set-up and that if GB wants to communicate with me that they should use all means that I have given permission for, in my case the website itself. They shouldn't assume that I have and/or will use FB or Twitter. but if they want to advertise to the masses, they should be allowed to do that in any way that any other company does.

TxJeans: I HAVE now seen the green (and maybe blue) banners after I posted that I hadn't.

My opinion is closest represented to that of jrsva's. I don't want my email clogged up with GB communication. If I was not a regular here, then maybe I would want to hear news from GB in a place where I frequent more often. (i.e. email, FB, newspaper, etc.)

Scout, I was speaking in a matter-of-fact manner, just giving information. No need to be aggressive in your response.

G-Mail is my primary e-mail address as well and GasBuddy has my correct e-mail address. Everything except the obvious Spam and what I have designated as Spam comes to my inbox. I don't use the Promotions folder. At least for me, I don't miss anything this way. I got the last e-mail we are talking about and all the ones before that.

Also, before I dump my Spam in my G-Mail account, I check it to make sure I'm not dumping something that isn't Spam.

Well said jrsva. I agree.

That still does not explain why the email notification about the 'bonus point month of September' came out days after the promotion had already started ....

Exactly. I don’t want my e-mail clogged up with notifications about WB posts, Buddy requests, photo comments and the like but GB has my correct address and they are welcome to use it for actual information. PM is preferred; keep it all on the site.

RichWLIN:

My email address registered with Gas Buddy is a Gmail address and I have never received an e-mail from Gas Buddy regarding bonus points or the survey (and the associated "survey points") in either my inbox or my spam folder, nor in any other folder. It can't be a "not using Gmail problem".

But I'm not going to open a Facebook or Twitter account to learn about what's happening on the Gas Buddy website or app when management can and should be telling me on the website or app itself about what's happening there. That's like telling me I should read Facebook or Twitter to learn what's new on my Gmail or Google account but not telling me on Gmail or on Google.

Rich - I did get some of the emails, but not all. I don't have Google+ account connected with the email that I have with GB. But, I wonder if sometimes they get held by some of the ISPs before delivered to junk or regular folders.

Scout - what is your point?

On Aug 28, 2014 7:13:32 AM a5 posted "I have never seen an email nor a green/blue banner, nor any other indication of news as to what's going on and only found this topic today after having seen GB refer to "bonus points"."

Sounds like he was stating what his experience was with GBO notifications - He apparently also hasn't seen the banners - which has nothing (or should have nothing) to do with emails.

SUVFan makes a good point: "G-mail, quite appropriately, filters the GB emails to the "Promotions" folder."

I, too, use a gmail account for comms with GasBuddy. My bonus point emails have all arrived in the "Promotions" folder. On my Android phone, I don't think I get an alert for these kind of messages and just need to look through my gmail folders regularly to find these.

When there is a price hike alert or PM received by my phone, I get a visual and audio alert. Messages considered promotions don't seem to work this way, but I could be wrong about this since I haven't paid close attention to these kind of messages. I do recall being surprised to find one.

I'm beginning to suspect that the bonus messages are being sent via Google+ and these aren't reaching people who are not using Google accounts? Just a SWAG.

G-mail, quite appropriately, filters the GB emails to the "Promotions" folder.

Scout, I think you missed the context of A5s reference to GB email. It had to do with folks who quit the site receiving email. Rich replied to A5's original comment.

I think A5s suggestion (not at all a complaint) with that post is that a lot of members who show up regularly might enable all of the website communications but disable email so they're not bothered by w/b posts, pms, or other messages the site sends regularly by email. I think that reinforces why the site should send out a broadcast message using the internal GB messaging system when initiating one of these promos.

We know September is bonus points month. Looking ahead, maybe October could be double bonus points month!

I have received only one e-mail from GB in recent years. It was a reply to a PM that was also sent by e-mail for some reason. I have all routine e-mail notifications turned off but that should not affect broadcast messages such as info on bonus points. No e-mail about bonuses or surveys. I look at my junk folder at least every other day; nothing from GB.

I get emails of "Notifications" such as Buddy Requests and Whiteboard activity. I get email replies from the moderators/administrators. Have never gotten any email notifications of Bonus Point periods.

The emails being sent by GasBuddy are being labeled as spam by the major spam filtering packages in use. It is not surprising that most people are not receiving them, especially if they don't peruse their spam folders regularly.

a5,

Presumably, the emails that were sent out might reach some of the inactive members. On the other hand, there have been many complaints about the electronic mail delivery system here as well.

As far as I know, I have received all of the notifications by email; however, I did notice that some were received well after the bonuses were under way. Facebook is not one of my personal preferences but we do use Twitter to promote some of our online business. Again, if they really want to reach everyone, it is advisable that all forms of communication be used, and used simultaneously rather than piecemeal.

RichWLIN, any member who has suddenly quit the site won't see that there are new points to be had. Unless of course they were following GB still on FB or twitter.

ROFL ... Scrapheap ;0}

You are always on your toes.

I could go for a TAY thread.

I am partly hoping since they finally acted upon the many requests for more points, that we may see some movement on the dropdown lists a group of us developed that would serve to simplify and solve a number of member-to-site communications. Course, they will have to dig it up from whatever hole PD & the site tried to bury it in ;0}

What toxigas is saying is 100% correct. I was probably 5000 points behind toxigas and within a few weeks we were neck in neck. Not sure where the "bonus points" were coming from each day. It seems like we all are getting 2000 points per day for posting 5 prices this week. One day I had about 3800 points for posting, not sure how that is possible.

I suppose “work a hardship” is too strong for the effect on rural folks of having to post ten prices to get full points but it would be inconvenient or a nuisance and would add no new info to the data base. If all you see on a daily basis is one small station with two pumps you would have to post those two prices five times each. What good is that? I would not really object if the rule was changed from 5 posts to 10 but it is just one more little nuisance I don’t need on a daily basis.

It is really odd that the Thank-You page varies from place to place and from day to day.
It does not vary for me. I’ve seen the green banner with no ad on each of the 15 days that bonus points have been given (12 currently and 3 earlier).

I got 1,000 bonus points, but no box at all. I am using the ad blocker, so if today would have been a blue box day and that is seen as an ad, I guess that explains it. But there was no blank area where the banner ad appears on the message board pages.

"That would work a hardship on those who live in rural areas and have only one or two stations to report."

Maybe, maybe not. In those rural areas, usually you are passing the stations twice. There's no reason they can't be posted twice, once at the earlier spotting time and once at the later time. Silly? Maybe. But with the points' primary purpose being prize chances, if one has posted all the prices one could see, I don't really care if they post the same single price 10 times, as long as they make sure the timing of the post on the site is not later than they actually saw it.

Frankly, as there is no way at all to police it, I don't care if anyone posts prices from fsls timed before the time of the price showing on the fsl. For example, if the time for an existing fsl station is "1 hr ago", there's no damage to the site if someone posts a price for that station with a time 3 hours ago. Their price will never show up on the site but they'll have their points. A message saying that there's a more current price for that station will appear.

Two of the ten prices I just posted generated that message b/c the regular prices for two stations, apparently, had been posted a few minutes after the time I actually spotted them. If one of those stations had been posted with all 3 grades at the recent time, I'd have entered only 7 prices, not bothering with the third at all.

To me, it still feels like the purpose of the bonus points program is intended to re-energize some of the base membership by dangling the double points carrot.

For one reason or another, there are many members who actively report prices over sustained periods and then just suddenly quit. We pass them on the leader boards all of the time. And, it's not just once in a while; a significant percentage of the membership either loses interest or otherwise quits participating here. Maybe GB has recognized this and is trying to bring these kinds of members back to the fold?

Wishful thinking I suppose, since the addition of new app gamers has and will likely continue to degrade the accuracy of price reports.

Gas_Buddy: “Instead of giving double points for five posts, allow ten posts to earn points . . . .”

jrsva allows: "That would work a hardship on those who live in rural areas and have only one or two stations to report."

That's true; I hadn't thought about folks who already have a hard time meeting the standard quota. Allowing ten posts might not be fair for them. Even though I live in a very small place now, there are 5 gas stations here. I imagine there are quite a few small towns or villages with far less.

Gas_Buddy = I did not tie this account to FB. I don't really use FB and I pulled up FB to look without signing in (can't remember the last time I signed into FB). I see no tie to FB in the delivery of the blue banner with the embedded ad, but I seem to get the ad free green one the past few days.

And, like jrsva, even though I don't live in a rural area, driving into work and back I pass one station (when I take the expressway). And, I can't always see the sign due to traffic and construction on the way into work. Most of my pricing posting comes from getting off the expressway one stop sooner to swing by the drugstore or grocery store or bank.

driver169, you may be right but I don't believe that EVERYONE is here only for the points and prizes.

All these rewards for posting prices just encourages cheating and thus crappy data. How about just removing points for posting?

Today was just a green block thanking me for entering prices.

I can't think of any reason for bonus points other than they figure most people would be happier with more points so they can pass inactive members on the ranking charts faster. But I have a lot of silly ideas.

“Instead of giving double points for five posts, allow ten posts to earn points . . . .”

That would work a hardship on those who live in rural areas and have only one or two stations to report. I’m fortunate that both local stations carry all three grades of gas, so I can get my daily price points by posting them once. If I needed ten price posts I would post the same two stations twice. If there was only one nearby station, one would have to post it multiple times during the day to keep up.

I cannot picture what the bonus “strategy” is. To me it is just one more thing to go wrong and the list of snafus is growing daily, consecutive days being the latest glitch. Seems like GB is rapidly picking up speed on its way down the slippery slope.

I haven't seen an ad embedded banner in the Thank You notice and never have. I have, however seen separate banners for advertisements but that's entirely different.
But then who am I to talk. I still have not received any notice about bonus points or the survey. Of course I'm not joining Facebook or Twitter so maybe that's the association with everything, being or seeing Facebook or Twitter with a Gas Buddy association.

I don't remember for sure which banner came up today. I think it was the green one w/out the embedded ad. Is anyone still getting an ad embedded in the thank you bonus notice? If so, is the banner blue or green (or some other color) and is the embedded ad a tobacco ad? I think I have heard most about the embedded tobacco ad and one reference of some other ad being embedded.

If points become a thing of the past, GasBuddy would also become a thing of the past - very quickly.
