Hey GasBuddies,

I have some exciting news to share! Starting January 1st 2014 we will be switching from weekly prizes to daily draws of $100 in gas gift cards.

With the way the calendar works this year we have our final weekly draw on December 30th for the week of December 23rd - December 29th. If you enter between December 30th and January 1st you will be entered into the draw for January 1st. Starting January 2nd all draws will be daily.

Tickets will still cost 1,000 points per ticket and the same rules apply. You must confirm your address with us and we still ask for a picture of yourself holding the cards for our 'Recent Winners' page.

We would love to hear what you think about our exciting new transition. Any and all feedback is welcome.

Regards,

Ryan (RD)

When a member joins he/she automatically earns 1 contest entry in addition to the 100 point signup.

I still would like to know how many tickets are entered for each contest each day.

Surprised looking at the winners at just how easy it is to win.

One guy won on the day he registered in January 2013 yet has never reported a price or participated in the forum.

Does that seem right or fair to you?

On average, how many GasBuddy members enter the contest for each day?

I believe new members get a free ticket when they join.
I just wonder how they can confirm the winners instantly when they used to have to contact and validate the winners - especially the Canadian winners which according to the contest rules the Canadian winners of sweepstakes have to take a Skills Test of some sort.

From Link

Prize Draw: A random drawing will be conducted on a date within 2 weeks of Contest Close Date by GasBuddy/OpenStore, LLC., whose decisions are final. Each entrant selected as a winner must comply with all terms and conditions set forth in these rules and regulations, and winning is dependent upon fulfilling all such requirements. Winners will be notified by email within ten (10) days of the drawing. GasBuddy/OpenStore, LLC. is not responsible for notifications that are misdirected or not received because of email addresses or mailing addresses that are not correct. If a winner cannot be contacted within fourteen (14) days after the first attempt to contact such winner, an alternate entrant will be selected at random from all entries received. If the prize notification is returned as non-deliverable, the winner will be disqualified and another winner selected in the original winner's place. Winners may be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility within fourteen (14) days of the first notification attempt. Winners who are located in Canada will be required to answer a time-limited, mathematical skill-testing question, without assistance, to be awarded the prize.

How does a recent winner who has only 100 points get an entry in to the daily draw that requires 1000 points per entry?

@rockkymountain,
As with most contests there is a link to the rules and conditions.

You can find it here and it should answer your question: Contest Rules and Regulations

Elmo, the price per ticket didn't go up.

As TxJeans commented, no one is ever going to be happy. When it was a quarterly contest, people cried for a weekly. Started the weekly and the cry went out for daily. Now we have the daily and people are wanting a weekly.

Jeez.

Folks, it's a bonus, having the drawing. We win daily when we find lower prices and when we help others in their search for cheaper gasoline.

Some were posting suggestion stating they wanted lower prizes with more prizes so more would win, others prefer less prizes at higher value.

I agree, maybe a few less prizes per week and a higher dollar amount. Sort of gives us more incentive to try. Won't knock $100, but more would be better.

Not so excited about spending 1,000 points for a chance at $100 instead of $250. With that said it seems the cost to enter just went up like my groceries! How about spend 500 points for a $125 gas card? I prefer the weekly drawing as well.

Feature request: It would be interesting for the GasBuddy website to have a running total of tickets "bought" each day so a person could gauge his/her chances in a given contest. Shouldn't be to hard to program.

@marcelpr - What do you mean "if Gasbuddy hadn't diappeared" the 5,000 points" you spent early this week for the weekly drawing scheduled for tonight.

If you read the opening post of this thread you would know that the weekly drawing was replaced with daily drawings starting the first of the year:

<<<"I have some exciting news to share!

Starting January 2nd all draws will be daily.">>>>>

So they didn't "disappeared" the points you spent - they were spent on losing tickets much like buying a lotto ticket and losing.

Are we misunderstanding your complaint?

You don't have to enter every day. You can, if you want, just enter multiple times (that is, buy more tickets) once a week, just like you did before, and have more chances to win that one drawing each week.

After all, regarding "One more thing to have to remember...", when the drawing was once a week, if you forgot to remember to enter the drawing...it's no different than remembering to enter now. And, even if you did remember to enter the weekly drawing, that didn't mean you did or you had to enter more than one ticket for the drawing; you could, just as you can now, save up your points and "buy" more tickets for any one drawing.

Not really that much of a difference except there are more prizes each week. The odds, as you know, simply change based on how many people enter any one particular drawing. For all you know, no one will enter a drawing one day, and everyone might use all their points to enter the next day's drawing.

What a disappointment that the the winning gift cards will only be $100. I hadn't realized that. It's less of an incentive. Of course I still want to win, but $100 will not go very far with the high prices of gas these days.

I still wish that they'd have stuck with a weekly contest but with more winners. It's a real hassle to have to enter everyday. One more thing to have to remember and do everyday. [sigh!]

They could still have as many winners to use for marketing purposes with an expanded weekly drawing.

@Schmeerhere
I think maybe there is some confusion in points based on your comment about "bazillion" points.
A person has a life time points that they have earned and available spendable points (life time - whatever they have already spent on tickets). So, yes, there are folks with a lot of banked points. Some may start dumping their points in bulk for a while, but I suspect a lot of those with really huge available points just don't bother with the contest.

Sandra - on the website home page click on "Points and Prizes".
If you are talking APP, you need to say which one. There are differences between the APPS (don't know if there is or not for prizes). On Android home page there is an icon for Win Gas (I have not entered using the APP).

Bottom line, it is a smooth marketing program by Gasbuddy. More drawings, more winners, more publicity. All designed to draw not only the public to the gasbuddy site, but to entice more stations to buy into the the Gasbuddy/OpenStore marketing product they are selling to station owners and franchises. It gets the stations on the person's smart devices (phones, tablets), etc.

OpenStore

I do not fault GB one bit. They are in business to MAKE A PROFIT, which is what makes this Great Republic..... GREAT!

Schmeerhere, are you suggesting that folks can only enter one ticket a day period? Even under the current system, folks can bank a "bazillion" points and then dump them all at once. Most of the folks with a "bazillion" banked points they haven't used really don't care that much about playing the "lotto" for the gas cards. Others will bank and then spend a bunch and still lose and be no further ahead. And, yes, some may bank and play a lot of their points at once and hit the jackpot.

I do wonder why they asked for feedback after the decision and coding was done. Seems like putting the cart before the horse. But it is what it is and we shall soon see how the new "game" plays out. I do appreciate that they have upped the amount they will be giving away, even though I have no expectation that I will ever be on the receiving end.

is Ipad allowed in this? just asking cause i don't see an app in the list.

why do the entries use so many points? seems like using half that and u can only enter once per day. ppl with bazillion points will win otherwise.

Sorry - typo - yes, I know there are 365 days. Yes, you have more days you can win. I still think the increased winners on the weekly draw makes more sense and is less likely to increase posting for points.

There was a good reason for a limit on points for referring friends. They don't want the site to become a spamming site for points. I think the limit is very reasonable. But, that is MY opinion and I just happen to disagree with yours. I never said you couldn't have an opinion, just that I disagree.

Time is money as well, and driving to the other side of town is rarely worth my time or money. For the most part, the distance I would have to drive to save a 50-60 cents on a fill up is not worth the time spent. My time is worth more than that even w/out using the gas to get there. Of course driving across town is entirely different depending on your size of town and traffic. I have no problem seeing prices for my entire area if needed as the web site and app currently work. Could it be smoother or easier - most things can be made smoother and easier in some way or another. I suggested the FSL as a means of doing what you want with what the app and website currently provide.

@TXjeans

There are 365 days in most years where I live. There are 365 chances to win as long as your remaining points balance is not erased come January 2, 2014.

Just do not plop all of your tickets down at once. You earn 975 points a day by posting prices and forum comments for 6 days a week and on Sunday you earn an extra 100 points for the survey poll.

And as for the app suggestion, it has been made several times in the proper forum and directly to the developers, but I will take the opportunity to spread the idea whenever and where ever.

GB should also remove the limit on referring friends to using GB be it via email or "Sharing" the app.

I already make use of the favorites as you suggested and I am well aware of the technology involved. It is what my entire working career (38+ years) was immersed in before I retired.

When there is a nickel or a dime+ difference in the per gallon price of fuel, I will drive across down to fill up. This is the entire PREMISE of the Gas Buddy site and mobile application.

Looking foward to the coming New Year.

@Doeslayer,

Your chances will still be based on the number of tickets you enter vs total of tickets in any particular drawing*. Yes, the drawing will be more frequent, but that also has downsides of more labor on the GB end, and more folks asking why the winner wasn't posted for Monday, Tuesday, etc, rather than just for "week x". Your chance of any one ticket winning will still be small. Personally, I would have preferred they enhance the weekly drawing with more winners than going to daily format...But that is just my opinion. (say 2 $250 and 2 $100 winners?).

* Don't forget, there are those with TONS of unused points to buy tickets that can dump into a daily contest. You don't really have 352 "chances" just 352 contests.

Personally, I do not see any need to give points for the use of the fuel log. Many have their own fuel log that works better for their personal needs. But, that said, it would be better posted on the "Suggest GasBuddy Improvement" forum.

As for the APP - that suggestion might have value, but should be posted over on the Suggest A Gasbuddy Improvement (SGBI) forum. You also need to include such information as which platform as each one has some differences in what is available and how it works. For the Android APP, you might consider putting Favorite Station Lists for each area of town. And, you can use the map to look for prices on the other side of town.

Personally, I will not drive very far (other side of town) to get gas unless there is a REALLY dramatic price difference that would justify the cost of driving across town in gas and TIME.

Sounds like a great idea as it gives gasbuddies 365 chances to win instead of 52.

While the award (or prize) is less, I do not see how anyone could or should complain.

I do think people who make regular and continual use of the fuel log feature in conjunction with posting fuel prices on a daily basis and posting article comments should get some sort of "loyalty" reward in the form of extra points above and beyond (yes, I am one of those who do all those things).

The mobile app needs to be revised as well. Let the user define the radius for searching for fuel prices. At present it appears to have a 7 to 10 mile limit. This means in larger cities, if you are on one side of the city, you cannot see prices on the opposite side.

Hi folks, just a new kid on the block. I just stumbled on your site by accident. This sure sounds like the makings of a dysfunctional family. You just can't keep everybody happy all at once. It will simply never happen.
I would like to offer something middle-of-the-road suggestion. You're offering to go from 250/weekly prize to 100/daily prizes starting January 2014. Your 100/daily comes up to 700/weekly which is definitely improvement over 250 you were giving weekly. Why not make bi-weekly prizes of 350 each. That way you would get greater satisfaction from most active and less active Gas Buddies.
So you know, I have yet to get a single ticket. May be most of you do it for the gas cards which are good incentives but I do this for the fun of it all and just to be helpful, no thanks required either. This may be hard to believe but true. The way I feel is if I had 1 ticket or 10 or 100 tickets in any draw, knowing my luck I wouldn't win.
I hope my idea will be helpful to you and it would likely be much less of a burden for you to run your daily draw idea. In any case it's only an idea and it's your show to do as you see fit. Whichever way you decide to go just doesn't matter to me. My wishes of best of luck with your endeavour. Merry X-Mas to all.

There are Way to Few replies on this.

This is terrible. If you want to reward us for a long time posting you need to increase the prize amount.

Doesn't seem a lot of thought went into this from "our view".

I can remember when GB was begging us to click on the ads.

Money is not the issue on your end.

Very bad idea for GB's.

Get ready for a whole slew of bogus gas price listings as people try to get the max daily points just to buy daily tickets.

We already have one person posting prices here where I live that couldn't possibly have been to that many gas stations in one trip just to get points, as the stations are on parallel streets and in all directions, north, south, east and west.

It just looks suspicious that this one person can be in all parts of this large city.

More likely the poster is sitting at their computer and copying the prices already listed and reposting them just to get the max daily points.

For those who have not read this post...
shame you missed this.
For those of us who have, it's still nice to think we may have a chance of winning.
As they say, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"

But you are still getting a 'chance' to win.
Like a lottery....
some get lucky, most don't. :-)

QUIT moaning.

I still think that those who haven't been a member for at least 90 days or no stripes should be exempt. If you are trying to get people to come here daily, then the restriction makes sense. EARN your way to a win.

I'm curious to all the winners who have no ranking, no stripes etc. how many stuck around and have been faithful posters and how many won and ran.

As I said in the other thread on the topic, I also think it is great that they are increasing the prize money/number of winners, but also think that going daily will have a negative overall impact rather than just increasing the number of winners and adjusting the amounts. I suspect that some will be disappointed with the drop to $100. I would recommend keeping one (or 2) $250 and then spread the rest out in $100 and $50 but pull from the weekly bin.
.
I would also suggest that if you do increase the frequency and number of winners, that you also put place holders on the winner page indicating the draw was completed and that you are still in the process of contacting and confirming the winners. We have commented in the past about the frequent posts asking about the drawing when the winners announcements are delayed do to issue with contact information.

I am sure that the suggestions about this can be found on the wiki that CK keeps where he throws anything and everything that has ever been suggested. If you can't find the suggestions regarding the improvement of the announcement system to avoid the threads asking where the winner is on that list, I am sure that CK would be happy to search through his list and provide the information to you.
