Why did the gas prices go down as soon as the federal govt shut down and back up when it opened up again?

I just checked the average gas prices for the United States (as a whole) and for both the Maryland and Northern Florida/Southern Georgia areas (for which I primarily drive and post gas prices) and except for a bump in early September, gas prices have been been consistently on a downward track (with obvious day-to-day variation). While gas prices for Florida as a whole and for Georgia as a whole have gone up several cents (on average), they are still well below what they were just several weeks ago. Check the Gas Buddy "Historical Gas Price Charts" or other sits for a better understanding of recent gas prices.

I'd say they started creeping up at a few stations slowly but didn't really change until about 1/2 way when the leaders had bumped up 15 cents and held and the others caught up and then it stabilized at the new level that the "leaders" in the area the same level as the "initial" bump of a few leader stations. At least in the area of my travels w/in my home site.
