"Faux News", really? I don't like Fox News either, but this is just ridiculous.

I've been pointed to some recent happenings in newsville. I'll try to deal with it.

If it were my website, I would attempt to stop this sort of mischief.

I find it odd that based on their profile, the member submitting those articles does not seem to be one who would label Fox News as Faux News.

I complained yesterday using the "contact us" method. I didn't know that they'd been doing it for this long.

Dianna, this user has done this yet again this evening. I reported the abuse the last time they did this, and reported it again. Rumbleseat is indeed correct, you can't utilize their copyrighted material without properly crediting the owner for the work.

The OP is not the place for editorial or sarcastic comment, if they wish to be sarcastic or editorialize the news source they read, it can be done on a reply. I believe that this website has also established this as a guideline.

Editorializing in the byline can get Gasbuddy in trouble if the owners of the copyright decide to take action.
If you think it is okay, I ask you to remember "allieparsons".

If you want to resolve it, Report the article to the mods explaining why it's not news worthy... I don't think the editorializing is worth reporting, unless the whole article is not news worthy (or editorial).. Then I will report if I have time..

I like the idea of having submission of news by members, it's just that some people are so into themselves they have to have a news article with their name as the submitter... I had several instances where news articles I submitted were replaced by others that posted the same article even, and after i submitted it, but got there "pack" to vote for their submission..

Lots of ways to resolve that issue, but again, all requires programming... which can be costly...

Maybe the news area is a test case to demonstrate that migrating power from the mods to the users tends to make things worse rather than better.

GB could fix the news problems with a little bit of programming. Take away member's ability to post 'news' articles and setup a news feed via RSS or some other suitable means, with articles pre-selected based on search terms that would yield the desired topics. Alternately, there are news aggregator sites that, for some kind of fee, might be a suitable filtered news source GB could tap into.

Or since one or more GB employees spend time writing the top 2 daily blog articles for the news section, the same employees could spend a few more minutes each day selecting a few articles from a feed previously set up on their computer and put those articles on GB.

However as I mentioned before, the existence of the news section seems to be primarily to get more views for the website ads, and if so conditions will not improve anytime soon. So editorializing, voting abuse, etc. will likely continue with only the worst offenders being sanctioned if and when they are brought to management's attention.

To me this is largely a user driven site. Editorializing in the byline strikes me as user driven, not something sanctioned by GasBuddy Inc.

The originator (when it's accurate) is fine, but the fact that it's being reported as GB News implies official agreement to me. Something that's labeled as "news" tells me the website posting it believes it to be true.

The news hasn't been "curated" for years, which is why I've spent the absolute minimum of time "reading" it. Click on an article and hit F5 four times, and then close that window or tab. A few seconds at most each day.

DiannaFan:

"IMO, it's fine to have this sort of thing, but GB's reputation is being harmed by the lack of disclosure. I frown every time I see an article linking to the Washington Times for example."

First, I'm not sure how Gas Buddy's reputation is being harmed by lack of disclosure if, when you open the link, the byline reflects the originator (such as NY Times or Fuel Fix, etc.)

As for frowning every time you see an article linking to the Washington Times, I'm sure that while others agree with you, and might frown seeing an article linking to the Wall Street Journal, I'm sure just as many might frown from seeing an article linking to The New York Times, or the San Jose Mercurty News, or "The Petroleum News". Better to have diversity of information than expect all members to fully agree with a small number of publications all aligned in the thought and information. I already know what the publications I "like" think; it's worth knowing what others think in order to substantiate my thought and reasoning, or to possibly change my thought, reasoning, and opinion.

And: your choice of "curated" was an interesting word. For those not familiar with it, outside of it's religious and visual arts contexts, it means "to select, organize, and present (suitable content, typically for online or computational use)". Class has been added to the discussions.

IMO, it's fine to have this sort of thing, but GB's reputation is being harmed by the lack of disclosure. I frown every time I see an article linking to the Washington Times for example. If it looks like it's official GB policy (which it does) that's a problem. That could be fixed with a very small change.

The news area seems to exist almost entirely without moderation. Among other things, editorials are regularly posted as 'news' and are not removed. I know, I've tested this by posting some editorial items.

I'm sure the purpose of the news section is primarily to get more views for the website ads, but the site could just as well force us to click through 5 ads when logging in and do away with the news section and it's useless comments-for-points that belong in JFF.

It used to be done by the GasBuddy mods, but they eventually opened it up to allow anyone to contribute, and they added a voting system that was abused to the extreme. That last bit may have been fixed by now -- I haven't seen complaints about it for some time. (The news area is such a cesspool in general that I tend to avoid experiencing it in person.)

It was one of yesterday's news items. The main article was removed, but it's still showing in the "Top 5 articles by day" feed (http://www.gasbuddy.com/Top-News-By-Day.aspx)

I has always thought the news items on the main page were curated, which was why I posted the comment here. Looking closer it appears I was mistaken, but I'm not sure. The title "GasBuddy Blog & News" implies to me that the articles were selected by GasBuddy. I think it's OK if they don't, but there should be something obvious that says GB doesn't select the articles if that's true.

(a) Include a link to what you're talking about.
(b) Flag it as inappropriate, perhaps via the Report Abuse link on the top of the discussion page. The mods will find that faster than they'll see this topic.
