Does anyone other than the winners of a gas card, know of somebody who won here?

Any user who participates in the site and has a ticket entry into the website has an equal opportunity to win the contest draw as everyone else who enters. It is a random draw.

We've had users with less than 1000 total points accrued win the contest (one user won via the one free ticket entry we give all users upon registering an account).

There is no such thing as an "insider" winner. I should note that site staff are exempt from the contest. Winners are chosen at random from the pool of entries.

We've been doing this contest for a very long time, all of the winners are real people who have participated in the use of the site and have exchanged their point credit for ticket entries.

"Since there is always a winner, the odds must be better then mega millions or powerball at least."

The reason there is always a winner is because the winner is chosen only from those who enter.

I see you posted your own query in "Off Topic" -- I'd expect less chance of a serious answer there.

The chance of winning, as for any fair drawing, is the number of tickets you entered divided by the total number of tickets in the pool. The latter figure is in the five-digit range these days; so, yes, it's a better chance than most lottery systems (though also a lower payoff).

Gas buddy, I didn't mean to get out of line...Since there is always a winner, the odds must be better then mega millions or powerball at least.

stopspeculating:

"I am also convinced that insiders are probably winning."

As a long time member and contributor to this website, you really believe that Gas Buddy management is faking the names (granted, they're anonymous, just like your screen name is) and locations of the winners? You really believe that, especially in the cases of long time and frequent contributors to the website, that Gas Buddy management arbitrarily came up with points and profile information for "insiders" so it looks like they're average members? And you really believe that Gas Buddy management made up all the message posts of "winning members" just so no one would guess the real story, that they're giving the $250 gas cards to each other and maybe to family members?

You really think that Gas Buddy management, and that of it's parent company, would really take the chance of faking the drawing to save a couple hundred dollars a week?

Really?

Interesting. I tried to start a topic about this very thing about what the odds are. Nothing but crickets. I am also convinced that insiders are probably winning.

It doesn't really matter. 100 chances spread out over 100 weeks, or 100 changes all in a single week, will still be the same probability of winning, to a first order approximation.

Does it count if I WANT to win? Really, though, I've wondered the same thing. I used to buy my entries to win 10-12 at a time, now I'm waiting until I have at least 100 to try to stack the odds (ever so slightly) in my favor.

That's right... it must be a conspiracy between all those winners and the employees and management of GB!! And you'll never win the gas card unless you're one of the elite GB insiders!!

PS: does aluminum foil work as well as tin foil? Because I don't have any tin foil and don't know where to get any, but I have plenty of aluminum foil, although I'm saving it for when I bake potatoes.

Yes, I know someone - not personally and in face, but as someone I have had as a buddy for some time and have spoken to via white board. I don't believe he is part of a conspiracy plot and I don't own a tin foil hat.

Or are you unsure of where to find the list of winners?

Primetime57,

You do realize the number of members there are on this site, don't you? There is a great possibility that you will never know anyone who won a gas card. That doesn't mean it isn't legit. I don't know anyone who won the PowerBall but it is legit.

Primetime57, is your concern is that the gas card drawing might be a fraud ("Nobody really wins")? Even if you get a "Yes" answer to your original question, how would you know that this person isn't also part of the conspiracy?

To expand on Don's post (from a member's perspective), yes, there are others besides the winner of the gas card who know who won. As shown on the link that Don provided, the winner is identified by his/her screen name, along with an indication of his/her Gas Buddy home site. While no personal information is provided about the winning member other than a photograph for publicity purposes, the "screen name" identity and home area isn't a secret.

If you're asking, as Don questioned, does anyone on Gas Buddy (reading this discussion thread, for example) personally know a gas card winner, many members are in "real life" contact with other members, either via e-mail or in some instances regular meetings of area/local Gas Buddy members (in the manner that ham radio operators or kite enthusiasts or crochet hobbyists meet periodically).

By your question are you asking "Does anyone reading this topic personally know a gas card winner?", or are you asking something else?

Can you provide a little more info about what you might mean by this? The question you've posed is a little foggy.

There are probably users within GasBuddy who know winning users on a personal level, or are familiar with certain members throughout the GB community.

Here's a link to the recent winners page
