lightbulbman2008 has set up a script (or seriously has no life) and posts to his own vanity topic in the Just For Fun category at least every few minutes all day long. This can't be for points, since you can only get credit for 5. Is there a point to this, or is he just wasting bandwidth?

And, more appropriate ways to report a specific member as compared to an issue....

Maybe that member had set up a script to auto-post so they wouldn't forget to post one day and lose their consecutive days, but went overboard with the posting frequency?

While it's likely a violation of the GB TOS, there are worse things on this site, such as fake price updates.

I'm not sticking up for lightbulbman2008 (never heard of him, for that matter, until this thread started) or even if he himself is posting in a thread someone started to "honor" him, but he's posted in some 10,000 different discussion topics, not just in a vanity topic someone started for him, so his posts have been across the board. Even if the majority of his posts (i.e., virtually all but one post in each of the other topics) were in the vanity thread, meaning he's averaged nearly 1,000 posts a day, at least he's (apparently) doing so in the innocuous discussion categories, not trolling in the serious political or fuel-related issues.

That's not to justify bulk posting, even in the Just For Fun discussion category. However, there are other members who have much higher message posts totals and much higher daily post averages, and in much fewer different threads. But, even if he has posted virtually all his posts in the vanity thread, he's averaged about 920 points a day since he joined Gas Buddy nearly five years ago. That means he's averaged about four gas price posts a day since he's joined. (And, as he's well exceeded the maximum points for message posting every day, he may well exceed the maximum points for gas price posting on some/many days.)

If this is the worst that a member can do, and again I'm not justifying bulk message posting (let alone script or computer generated message posting) posting), at least he's contributing to the primary purpose of this website, and at least he's being prolific in a place it doesn't matter. And, for all we know, as someone suggested below, this may be "his life". There have been message posts with worse or less contributions as part of a member's life.

A moderate amount of fluff is OK. Continuous posting is not OK, even in JFF, according to my understanding.

>> I feel like I should help make it better

Not sure how that is accomplished by this thread. I see absolutely nothing wrong for fluff being posted in the fluff groups.

Fraudulent ad views (such as generated by a bot like that) are grounds in every ad service I know of to have the website kicked from the program. No ads probably means No GasBuddy. That's not something anyone wants, is it?

Interestingly the bot posts stopped about a half hour after I started this topic.

And yes, I have a life. Part of it involves buying gasoline. I've found GasBuddy very useful. It's given something to me and I give back. For some reason, I feel like I should help make it better so it benefits everyone. Go figure.

It's in Just For Fun. Who cares? If it was in another category then it might be an issue.

The thread in question is here.

Posting no more frequently than four times a minute would not impose that great a load on the servers, and generates a bunch of money for the site through ad "views", so I'd be surprised if the moderators considered it a problem. It certainly doesn't violate any rule that I'm aware of.

If this is that big of an issue, it could easily be dealt with by imposing some sort of limit on posts. For example, you could lose the ability to post after 75 posts in one day. Or impose a lifetime cap of 100,000 posts.

I looked for threads started by Lightbulbman2008 and the most recent ones posted to are "Say a Big Hello..." and "Honk if..."
.
The "Honk if" seems to get 5 posts a day from shashatern.
The "Say a Big Hello..." Only has a few hellos from others each of the past few days.
.
Maybe the thread has been addressed?

tubie has a "Just for fun" topic that is similarly being posted by a script / bot and has been for quite some time. It appears that it is tolerated as long as the posting isn't too frequent (tubie's look like it posts randomly every 15 minutes to an hour).

DiannaFan, you're right to report this, but you should do it via the Inbox or the Contact Us link, to get directly to the mods. They have previously booted members who have been abusing the forum, and locked the topics in question.

(Yes, they do care, if past experience is any guide.)

Server space and bandwidth have gotten cheap. I don’t think the Mods care about those factors. I have never opened the JFF forum but I am glad it is there. It provides a place for a lot of the nonsense that this site attracts. Just think how bad the rest of the forums would be with no JFF.

Last time I looked this was a forum for asking questions about how the site works and bringing possible problems to the attention of the mods.

Jealous much? Or just seriously have no life and spend all day worrying about what other people are posting in Just For Fun?
