Does anyone know what is the maximum length of a forum post the system allows?

Scout maybe Anthony Weiner would take you up on that, perhaps you could meet at K-mart.

"...that's right, I'm going to post entire books on here... or maybe just page after page of Lorem Ipsum."

It may sound funny but I've been in such threads where several members, to make their point of view and "to teach you all...", have essentially cut and pasted or rambled on for what would be short stories and novellas. And the next person, not to be outdone, added his/her two cents worth. Or more like two dollars worth.

LOL "denial-of-posting" DOP attacks! that's right, I'm going to post entire books on here... or maybe just page after page of Lorem Ipsum...

Actually with all the discussion of the new Ignore Short Messages option I just wondered if the system had an upper limit.

Like kwzh, I haven't heard of a fixed limit. Several years ago, when there were more pages of responses than there are now, we had discussions about old time television and radio that ran for tens or dozens of paragraphs, easily several thousand words. And there have been some "trollers" (for lack of a better word) who've posted what seemed like the short stories you'd find in the old Alfred Hitchcock or Amazing Science Fiction or Ellery Queen short magazines, some easily the size of stories in Harpers, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker magazines.

Is there something, GoGoGoodyear, you're interesting in posting that's of "considerable length" that can't be attached as a link?

Perhaps GGG is going for a "denial-of-posting" attack that will take more than six years to be received. :-)

That is an excellent question, maxstar. I've got one even better - Who cares? Someone has too much time on their hands.

I expect there's no hard limit, or I would have heard about it before now. Please don't try to stress the system to find one, though.

I am not aware of any upper limit on forum posts. The longest one I have taken note of was close to 3000 characters. It was a history and discussion of some issues in the Opinion Poll thread, gathering up some things that had fallen off the four-page limit.
