I have been a member since June 2012. I have 3,678 posts and 21410 points. Looking at other posts I see one who has been a member since August 2012. They have 868 posts and 182,855 points. I know this is not a very important question but is there something I can do to get more points with less posts? Thanking you in advance.

Don't even know why this thread is still going. The OP doesn't post gas prices, just posts in the forums. How many people have a brown car with speed lines? Why post at a price reporting site just to jaw? Further, why cry about other members points if you don't take the many suggestions below to get more of your own?

It would be more interesting if the same question hadn't been asked a few hundred times earlier.

New Learned Wisdom from other Posts-
1. Six days/week you can earn 975 points. One day a week you can earn 1,075 points.
2. You only get 20 points for forum posts with a maximum of 100 points on each day.

To clarify my earlier post, which read:
"If what you were asking was referring to the points the other member received from his 868 message posts, he only received 17,360 of his 182,855 total points from discussion board posting.", the other member may not have received even that many points from his discussion board posts; he may have posted many of his posts after making five "for points" posts in one day (and could have, for all we know, made all 868 posts in one day), and earned only 100 discussion post points for all his effort, meaning that he made even more gas price posts (or news article readings).

The bottom line is, to earn points, you need to do points activities; to earn more points, you need to do more points activities (up to, at least, the maximum point levels per action per day). The way to get more points with less posts: More gas price posts and/or more news article readings. But you wont' get more "discussion board points" with less discussion board postings.

Six days/week you can earn 975 points. One day a week you can earn 1,075 points. If you maxed your points out daily you would have earned roughly 276,000.

Here is a link on how to earn points on this site.

On the contrary, if the answer helps encourage you and others to post fuel prices, then as far as this site is concerned, it was one of the most important questions you could possibly ask.

yjsk2100:

"No this is not what I meant."

Sorry, but your asking "...is there something I can do to get more points with less posts" certainly seemed like you were asking "Can I get more points than the other person but do less than the other person is doing".

Maybe it wasn't what you meant, but it seemed like what you were asking. Thus the comments to that affect.

If what you were asking was referring to the points the other member received from his 868 message posts, he only received 17,360 of his 182,855 total points from discussion board posting. Based on his being a (approximately) nine month member, he's averaged about 650 points a day, meaning the bulk of his points have come from gas price posting, not discussion board posts.

The bottom line is, if points are what you ("you" in general, not you specifically) are interested in, the fastest way to accumulate points is to post gas prices, as they have the highest point value per action. (150 points per price post versus 20 points for discussion board posts and 25 points for reading news articles.) Said another way, gas price posting will get you more points than any other points earning activities on Gas Buddy, including "posts" (assuming you mean discussion board posts).

In any case, glad the comments helped you.

If your question is "Can I get more points than the other person but do less than the other person is doing", then the answer is generally no.
No this is not what I meant.

By reading the responses you have helped me. Thanks.

Read the material in the "How to Earn Points" link at the bottom of the page. Most points can be earned by updating gas prices.

If your question is "Can I get more points than the other person but do less than the other person is doing", then the answer is generally no.

The points you can earn are a return (reward, if you will) for doing the various points activities. You earned 100 points for joining; and you can earn up to 1,200 points for referring others to this website. To maximize your points earnings, you can earn 150 points for each gas price post you make a day (earning a maximum of 750 points per day, though you can post additional price posts for the benefit of your fellow members); you can earn 20 points for each message post you make a day (earning a maximum of 100 points per day), you can earn 250 points for each daily news article you read a day (earning a maximum of 125 points per day), and you can earn 100 points per week for voting in the weekly poll.

There is no way to get more points by doing less; the only thing you do by doing less is not earn points.

You could have, for example, as a nine month member of Gas Buddy, earned approximately 275,000 points for doing the maximum daily points earning activities, but you couldn't have earned that many for doing less actions.

You need to post prices. You get 150 points for each price posted for the first 5 posts of each day. You only get 20 points for forum posts with a maximum of 100 points on each day.
