Hi Horseears,

Store logos like Hess appear on GasBuddy as part of a partnership between GasBuddy and convenience retailers called OpenStore. For more info, please visit:
http://www.openstoreloyalty.com/

If you have any questions, you can contact them directly here.

Thanks for your interest!

Pay more if you want to, but I don't follow the logic in holding a grudge against a station owner for taking this website up on a free offer.

I could understand it being a reason to stop using this site altogether if someone believed the site, via the offer, was conveying an unfair advantage to those who signed up. The station owners who sign up probably have less clout than we do over making changes to the msl and the related map.

What are they going to do, send an email that says something like, "Hey, Gasbuddy website, I like this GB Direct thing you've started, but I really hate the way my logo is going to be superimposed over other stations on your map -- if you'll scale that back, I'm in"?

And from the other side of the discussion, I buy fuel from the station with the lowest prices - I couldn't care less if they are GB Direct members or not. I suspect the vast majority of GB users are of a similar mind.

And I see no impropriety with respect to the GB Direct program since as I understand it, the program is available to any who choose to participate.

First of all, Ziyulu is wrong — there is no fee for becoming a GB Direct member.

That said, there is a risk. It is very unusual but I am in solid agreement with bb — I will never buy anything from a GBD merchant. The whole program is ill-advised. Giving certain stations special treatment throws doubt on the accuracy and reliability of the entire site. There may be nothing wrong but there is an unmistakable aura of impropriety in this program.

Just some feedback for you, Horseears…. I will *never* buy *anything* from a station that has a logo displayed or otherwise gets special treatment. These logos are oversized and cover neighboring stations on the maps, and I feel such advertising taints the usefulness and previously unbiased nature of the pricing information that is presented here. If you, or others, want to get my attention, all you have to do is to price the gasoline you sell cheaper than that at neighboring stations.

ziyulu:
"You have to pay to have your logo displayed."

Really? Are you speaking from experience or from a reference? Because the moderators have said a number of times that there is no charge to gas station operators.

Welcome, Horseears!

I suggest you use the "Contact Us" button on the right side near the bottom of each page and ask how you can enter the "Gas Buddy Direct" program.

The only information I found on the site about it are two 5 year old posts in the site announcements section (scroll down to the posts):

New Program - GasBuddy Direct (Part 2) There is no cost or fee for stations to access the GasBuddy Direct program. It is simply a way for stores to get their prices on the site more easily on regular basis. Many stations current report prices to Gasbuddy manually. Hopefully now the information will be more timely and reliable. We do not want to undervalue member participation in reporting gas prices and we can not be any more appreciative and amazed at the collective efforts of everyone. The GasBuddy Direct program is not meant to compete with member price reports, it is simply a way for station owners and operators to report prices similar to how they always have, only it is now easier. In a sense what we have done is created an area that gives station owners and operators their own Favorite Stations List to post prices. The more prices in the system the more useful and reliable the gas price information becomes. We welcome your comments!

New Program - GasBuddy Direct I would like to take this opportunity to introduce everyone to a new program that we have for stations owners and operators to more easily submit prices to Gasbuddy. We are in the midst of testing it and we have coined the program as GasBuddy Direct. Some stations and chains will be feeding prices directly from corporate headquarters on GasBuddy sites. As the GasBuddy websites have become more popular, stations are noticing that the GasBuddy sites are having an impact on their sales. They need their prices showing on GasBuddy or it hurts their sales. I think this is the exact kind of impact we need to have on the market. It has been said that the GasBuddy sites can be perceived as a way to boycott those stations with the highest prices which will force them to lower their prices, and we like to think that this beginning to become a reality. The prices posted under GasBuddy Direct do not count for points and those stations etc are not eligible for the contests etc.
