tnemec, judging from how you phrased your question, it seems possible that you're not familiar with the GasBuddy point system at all. See FAQ #24 (and other nearby items) for more info on that. Note that this is completely independent of the "award levels" on the GasBuddy smartphone app.

"How is 30 Day Rank Calculated"?
In the most simple terms, the 30 day rank is a list the Gas Buddy members who have accumulated the most points over the past 30 days.
As for: "If I go back and forth to work, updating 9 stations each trip, am I wasting my time after the 3rd station on the first trip?"
It's a matter of opinion whether or not posting more prices than you'll get points for is a waste of time or not. Granted, you only get points for a maximum of five gas price posts a day (as well as points for up to five message posts and for reading five news articles), the more prices you post the more current you keep the pricing list (even if all you're doing is saying the price remains the same) and the longer prices for that specific gas station stay visible (i.e., the station doesn't drop off after so many hours). And, the more prices you post, whether you get points for your posting or not, the more you're helping your fellow Chicago Gas Buddy members be knowledgeable about fuel prices. Just as their price posting, whether they get points for their posting or not, helps you be a more knowledgeable shopper.
Said another way, the last price you post (or the last price other members post), regardless of whether or not they got points for the post or it was "an extra, not for points post", might just be the price that's most useful to them, and the last price they post might just be a price that's helpful to you.
"If I go back and forth to work, updating 9 stations each trip, am I wasting my time after the 3rd station on the first trip?"
I don't know. I can't tell you if "you" are wasting your time or not. But, if it makes any difference, to me it's not a waste of time. That's for you to decide, deciding whether you're here for the points, or you're here to help your fellow Chicago Gas Buddy members, or you're here to help your fellow Chicago Gas Buddy members but only if you're getting points for helping them.

I think so.
I use the iPhone app, it just says 30 day rank.
If I go back and forth to work, updating 9 stations each trip, am I wasting my time after the 3rd station on the first trip?
