Because the top of the page updates immediately on earning the points, and the box next to your message does not update until you post an additional message. For example, before I posted this message, the top of the page showed an amount 750 points greater than that to the left. Upon posting this message - the left amount updated to the amount shown at the top.

There are three point totals found on GasBuddy.
Today's Points are points earned today, Total Points are your total points earned since registration, and your available point balance - this is how many points you have available to enter tickets into the draw.
All of these totals are calculated automatically, points are awarded when point earning activity is performed. This being said, if you do not perform daily point earning activity (whether it be missing for the day [normally what happens] or being not logged in [sometimes happens]), points will not be awarded.
For information on ways you can earn points and maintain your consecutive day count, see this link
This topic is also being moved to the correct forum area.

I never noticed. Mine are the same. Did you buy tickets with your points?

That is very strange. Mine are the exact same number. The only thing I can think of is that the guy who does the calculations at GasBuddy Headquarters made an error on his calculator. But, I wouldn't bring it up to them. They can be a little cranky up there right now due to the freezing weather.

First, as a reminder, you're posting your question in the General Gas Talk discussion category. This category is for general talk about fuel, oil, gas stations, etc.
As a new member, you might want to review the list of discussion categories to see which are most appropriate. I say this because of your multiple posts in this category.
However, to answer your question, the number of points at the top of the page reflects both the number of points you earned today, and the total number of points you've earned since joining Gas Buddy. The points listed to the left of your post is a duplicate of your total points.
Only you can see the number of points at the top of the page (it's essentially your home page), whereas all members reading the discussion can see the number of points (on the left) as it's part of the discussion box.
Does that answer your question?
