How do you get a broken link in a Message Forum - Read Message
Category: Off Topic > Topics FIXED. The person who started the topic can't get back to that main area to fix the broken link. Do you fix it? Thanks for responding on how to get this broken link fixed.

@ Gas Cat,

If you're referring to this topic, I'm fairly positive I updated the link as per a request through site feedback (though I could be wrong about that)

If there is no response from a moderator, there are two possibilities:
1. Post a msg in the existing topic containing the correct link (which is a lousy option).
2. Replace the topic as follows:
a. Post a replacement topic, e.g. "Doilies II", with a correct OP and a link back to the original topic for those who wish to read what is there
b. Post a final msg in the original topic telling members that the topic has been closed and replaced by a new one and include a link to the new topic.

Note that Step 2a. must be done first in order to obtain the target for the link in Step 2b.

It would be a prudent move to compose the new OP in Notepad (or other editor), polish it and save it. Then copy the text to the msg dialog box to post it. If something should go wrong with the posting process, you will have the text available to try again. Any posted link should be tested immediately upon posting so that you will have 5 minutes to open an edit and 5 more to complete it in order to fix the link. Of course testing before posting by copying the link to a browser is extra insurance.

The broken link is in the OP? If so, you ask the Mods to fix it. There is no way for a member to edit the OP of a forum topic, or any other post for that matter, after the 5-minute edit window.
