Do you rotate your tires as recommended or drive until it is time to buy more tires?

There are more options than that...mine are rotated when changing to/from winter tires. It means slightly less rotation than recommended for summer tires & a little quicker for winter tires ie. 10-15K on summers & 5-10K on winters.
As for rotating only for break-in...that's ludicrous & someone must have been pulling your leg. You rotate for evening out wear & uneven wear only gets worse as your car ages.

Rotating the tires is probably important during the first 5K of driving as they break in but after that I've read that it's less important.

I drove 27 thousand miles a year for 30 years. I inflate to whatever provides even tread wear. I have always rotated my tires half way through their life, and they are evenly worn when I replace. The less you let them fool around with your car the better off you and the car are.

Tire rotation about every 5,000 miles at oil change intervals. More important for front wheel drive vehicles because of higher tread wear on the front tires.

Tires still dry rot after about 6 years. I still rotate them to even out the treadwear. I'll still have plenty of tread on them when they're starting to show side wall cracks.

I've owned at least 10 cars that never needed tire rotation, no problems, all were rear wheel drive back then. Never any flats, blow-outs, balance problems, and note I watch diligent for bad road surface hazards, poor RR crossings, and such.

Saying I treat my vehicles suspension like it is a Humans, knowing better but with TLC. during in use. Most drivers/owners don't give it a thought (mistreatment) Wives have their hay-day on some days with every bad road pavement encounter.... Say What Gents? There are exceptions, few, big few.... Lot's of other Stuff also need rotated over a short time period like "Honey drive my car, and see what you think may be wrong with it, Will you"? A strange noise! Sometimes! Other than You.....!

About once a year since retired unless I see abnormal wear and then I will rotate them right away.

Only once on one vehicle since the year "2000", plus all spares are still in their original holders (stored location).

Yes, just rotated the tires on my truck myself yesterday. This gives me insight to look them over and clean and wax up the inside/outside of the wheels also. The new vehicle gets down by the dealer during normal maintenance.
