Don't you just love the idiot that doesn't pay attention and delays you at a light when he/she gets through it and leaves you behind because the light changes back to red. This is the utmost at wasting gas by sitting an extra 2-3 minutes at a light.

MertieMan - There are other areas that people waste gas. Speeding is a big area as well as the people that feel they need to warm up an automobile for 20 mins before taking off so the interior is warm. Also those people that feel they need to leave an automobile idling when they stop at a c-store to get a coffee or paper because they don't want the interior to get a couple of degrees warmer or cooler than they like it to be.

People will say there is more waste by people that drive what they feel are "gas guzzlers" but there is more waste by people not driving to get the best fuel economy out of what they have for an automobile than the automobile itself.

Drivers license should not be issued from boxes of Cracker Jacks. I'm all in favor of requiring an IQ test as part of the examination.

Contiki; Can you actually imagine a blast from a locomotive horn at a traffic light? I would probably miss the light because I was laughing so hard.

I think some motorists need this to wake them up at a light.....lol.....

Most people also don't understand that if your vehicle is across the cross bar at an intersection, technically you have ran the light, plus if you get hit by a bus or truck making a turn, in most cases it will be your fault.

I love the ones that just have to keep the nose of their vehicle attached to the tailpipe of the car in front of them even if it means sitting in the intersection. The light has turned red and it's gridlock until the traffic they're determined to be a part of has moved enough so that other cars can join the fun. Police could hand out hundreds of tickets a day for obstructing traffic just in the one intersection near where I work.

Tap the horn sooner, it's your gas/aspirin a wasting away, just consider if you were the culprit then how long would you like the behind guy to wait on you stalling traffic. Unless your vehicle is 3rd or fourth in line waiting, start tapping those Lap Lookers, still be nice, smile and lock your doors first, maybe waive the V .... hold up your Fish Emblem!

With the shorter green lights (red light camera intersections) only one large truck can get started and through an intersection before the light turns yellow - just so the city can juice their revenue

After 4 seconds, I flash my high beams a couple of times for a younger driver ahead waiting on the unnoticed green. Older drivers might need a tap on the horn, even though I seldom honk at anything. There is a difference between a tap, a beep, long blast, or repeated sounding of an uncouth device only when it is for a warning.

Maybe just maybe some drivers never tap their horn at a 4-way blind alley intersections, we have a lot of those in downtown areas along with very narrow alleys hampering making a two-way exchange pass.

Horn blasts in one of those alleys might mean the other vehicle isn.t planning on stopping completely. I stop an then tap before moving(creeping forward) the nose of my vehicle at the blind intersections. BetterLuck.. with the horn or B..lights flashed...! Try both if needed to save fuel.

We have many long lights in this area and if you don't immediately go on through them, then you will be waiting an extra 2-3 minutes for them to change again, if they indeed do change. I have seen one in a nearby suburb that will change and if you are the third vehicle in line, it will change back to red before you can get through it. All it takes is one person not paying attention and about 6 minutes can be added to your wait, which is frustrating to say the least if you are trying to get to work.

MertieMan; I want to apologize for being a bit harsh on my reply to your scenario of the red light delay of any driver ahead of ones vehicle ,then causing an extra gas wasting event.

I first read your effort involved as that you may have been already in motion toward a green light, as following behind and then the motorist ahead was poking along and not paying any attention to the light timing.

The other way may have been the delay was a distraction beginning when the light went green, with a delayed hold-up for following vehicles by the distracted driver just sitting there, yes that is a cruel waste of time/fuel. I picked the wrong thought about your scenario, Sorry!

Why wait through the light fuming about the "idiot" who's not paying attention. Do something sensible about it.

If a driver is busy and hasn't noticed the green light, a light tap on the horn usually gets them going without getting them mad. It seems like common sense to me.

I sort of agree with rick evens. My thoughts are drivers that are following up close behind another vehicle at many red light intersections, too close, then they are braver to challenge making it on threw, while the others chicken out, maybe because of previous ticketed bitterness. Distance is a solution for not trying to control the other doofuse's mind set or anyone else on their own driving habits ahead of you.

Saying you haven't "walked in their shoes" and they may have a valid reason, unknown to the driver following who never makes any mistakes each day...... no matter..... at what? Has it become legal to rear-end anyone' vehicle ahead of say your vehicle, because of your driving habits? Brakes, ABS brakes can't work unless applied, and then the gas saving thing, a long with the brake lights lit up thing , along with defensive driving thing, along with clear vision ahead thing, ETC. Yes include that daily MOOD thing, maybe planet Moon thing... Gas savings again can be had by keeping some distance, like who is in charge of ones driving anyway daily? Big GEESH!

Has the %..age of annoying drivers increased for wasting fuel? I think so, because the worldly pace has speeded up, it's all about Quicker today, even the Wife agrees on that "Quicker I have a list Dear"... "Thank You"!

rick evans; You are exactly right, especially the one about waiting on kids at a school, when a school bus goes right pass their houses at least twice per day. This should not be allowed. Parents clog up the bus lanes and surrounding areas of all schools because their little precious pets are entirely too good to ride a conventional bus with the rest of the children.

Such drivers are annoying, but I would hardly call them important in the scheme of gasoline wasting things. Statistics guarantees getting stopped at a red light regardless of what occasional feckless doofus leaves you stuck at the red.

Far more gasoline is wasted by:

1. Parents waiting in idling cars for upwards of an hour to pick kids up at
school.

2. Drivers who remote start cars and leave them warming while they get ready
for work.

3. Drivers who line up at drive up windows.

Oilpan4; That isn't a safe option in turning off the car, it is the fact that a person wasn't paying attention at a light and you had to pay for his ignorant mistake.
