Aint no MPG like infinity MPG :-P

I use my 28 speed bike for local trips whenever weather and carrying capacity permit, and I've made round trips faster than by car by not having to search and fight for a parking spot.
And I'm fit and slim and feel great.

I would like to but it just isn't feasible. I'm looking at probably 25+ miles one way using the bike friendly roads over some nasty hills. And no shower at work (so my co-workers probably appreciate that I don't bike in.)

I try to ride my bicycle or longboard every chance I get as an alternative to driving. Unless I'm carpooling or picking up groceries, short distant travelling is satisfying to do with your own two legs.

I went exactly 4 years in rural Maine with only a bike. I changed jobs and wonder how I did it (the biking ...every day). Except when i put a challenge in from of me I beat it. Goal was 3 years no car, but I went 4. In honesty it took the extra year to find a job that paid enough to take on the car expense. I'm a numbers person and study the cost of transportation. Now i look at the cost on my life this job is having and wish to get back to the biking setup I had.

The bikes sold in the DC area are expensive and most are design for recreation and not for commuting. Local roads in the Washington DC Metro Area can have steep uphill climbs and multiple stops so a bicyclist really needs high torque (low gearing) rather than high speed gearing. Because of poorly maintained road surfaces, stability and shock resistance in bike design is more important here. Finally most bikes sold locally have NO cargo capacity.

Some localities like Bethesda Maryland are experimenting with renting a bike especially designed for short commutes for a few hours - this actually makes more sense than buying a bike.

its great I use it to go to work with it some times I don't use the car for a couple weeks. that is how I lost over one hundred pounds and saved the gas money and the bike was paid for in the first year.
