I understand that some folks want to stretch their gas dollars and others simply for what ever the reason (DUI) don't have a drivers license prefer to drive them, but they're a pain and in my opinion very dangerous.

They are great but they are not bicycles...many riders are inexperienced and ill-trained....but I love them.

I saw people riding them all the time in college. In the city with a new-ish moped, they kept up with traffic just fine to about 40 mph.

We have two mopeds and 125 mpg is nothing to laugh at. In 1999 I filled my moped 4 times with gas and that's riding it every day unless it was pouring rain to work and back home again!

Forty years ago mopeds were fun in the Sun, freedom, a slight hassle. Today they have a place, hardly safer than skate-boards, plenty of traffic hassle, freedom curtailed, risks/costs up. Seems the age bracket is still 13-16 yrs. or 55-65 yrs. old bracket.

My local, see very few, back neighborhood thing, Spring season reveals a few Shinny ones appear then maybe early Summer. My guess is garage storage later, reasons vary.....Forty years ago was their "Grand day" era.

It's just like any motor vehicle if the user is responsible I have no worry and if not well that is a accident waiting to happen and worse on motorcycle or moped.

As long ans the rider is behaving predictably and responsibly, then I have no problem with mopeds and scooters.

We have a few of them in Waukesha, seniors are using them for all their little errands. They are cheap on gas but I can't stand trying to drive behind them, too slow.

IMHO They aren't really suitable for anything.
They are unsafe on a road with cars, they are unsafe in bicycle lanes.
They are incompatible with the other modes of travel.

Mopeds run a relatively high risk of becoming crash casualties.
This is mainly due to the high riding speed in relation to the riders’ vulnerability.
It is faster than standard bicycles and much slower than automobiles.

I've ridden mopeds but prefer bicycles instead, weather permitting. You stay in better shape and can take them on sidewalks. Mopeds are too slow for highways and here in Minnesota at this time you'd have a hard time getting anywhere on one.

For running errands around town I suppose they would be ok, otherwise I don't really see them as very practical.

A Moped, has a motor and pedals, thus, MoPed....
If you are thinking of a scooter, they come in different sizes, from 50cc to 850cc!
BMW just introduced one, top speed of 105 mph!...my Aprilia 200cc scooter has a top speed of 80 mph....50cc scooters tops around 40mph, while a 125cc goes 55-65 mph.....
Most states require at least a drivers license for 50cc scooters and a motorcycle endorsement for anything over 50cc....Only a few states do not require a drivers license.....
So, do not pass a scooter in the city, they may out accelerate you at that green light! they are not all the same!

mopeds, small and large displacement scooters are excellent transportation in an urban area (depending on whether you don't mind weather events); I would inlcuded Segways in this, as well.
