No! Even if it does save fuel, is it worth getting somewhere that is 400 miles away 2 hours later just to save 5-10 bucks?

It does save fuel but I'll only try to go 55 traveling home late at night. Even then it is pretty scary because the faster (and possibly impared) drivers sure do come racing up on me and I'm running in the far right hand lane on a multi-lane (5-6) highway.

I can't drive 55, half of the bozo's that get ahead of me in traffic wouldn't even drive that fast if it was the posted limit!

Makes no difference here in San Jose. Freeway speeds on 101 and 880 are always crawling at 25mph for miles on a good day.

55 is rather cool in the Suburbs where the limits are only 35 and 40 mph. Often busting out into traffic from a restaurant with family members after eating really tests your engine energy levels. 55 also gets it done when 3rd in line entering into a yellow 3 second traffic light change, helps the 4th vehicle to make it avoiding any hard rear-enders, and glass messes/few parts scattered among the other cups ,paper, straws, napkins, smashed bottles, cans, paper sacks, ETC.
So 10mph. above is or seems the norm for most places of driving nowdays often stretched to 15 above maybe a few more at rush hours when no distractions prevail, sure that seems reasonable, I'll just get a tune-up, go for a P... Chip, have a roll-bar installed in my 4dr. Titanium "stuff" for fuel savings! 55 ain't working......

No. will only promote wider range of speed on highway, making them less safe.

Clunk49, having driven thru Nashville this afternoon and noticing that no one on I-24, I-40 and I-65 were paying any attention to either the cops or the 55 mph signs ...... so Nashville is not ready for 55

Well, since the speed limit is a maximum, anyone who wants to drive 55 and save fuel can do so, and the rest of us whose time is valuable will drive the speed limit. As ldheinz said, though, that kind of speed differential in heavy traffic is very dangerous for everyone.

Since my first History of driving I have never been bothered by other drivers that have passed going around my vehicle then disappear ahead out of sight, A-OK with me, a few times the results ahead were not so good, moments later.
Those who test the road ahead are a benefit to me and my driving habits, fuel savings, detours ,braking, or avoidance of any issues, even gaining time. Areas of improvement.... More fuel, higher prices, more places to go, less time enjoying the Go......

Banjoe - "I usually travel at 55 to save fuel but the city cops all seem to have a problem with it. "
That's because the police aren't concerned with mileage, they are concerned with safety. Traffic wise, the safest speed is the average speed of traffic. It requires little of yourself and others in the way of adjusting for other drivers. A speeder takes care of the speed differences themselves, as they are the one overtaking other cars. A slow driver, however, requires that all the other drivers adjust to THEM. Eventually, one of them won't, and all your gas saving achieved through irritating other drivers will be lost in the high speed collision. And the police get to clean up the mess.

If they lowered the speed limit ot 15mph, we'd save a lot of fuel, becasue you coul only drive about 120 miles per day. At 65mph you can drive 520 miles in the same 8 hour day. This is the primary principle in how fuel is saved by lowering the speed limit. Forgetting about all the other ecconomic factors involved in spending all your time driving.

Texas is already at 85mph in some areas, and Nevada is pushing hard to match them. I seriously doubt that a nationwide limit of 55 will be reinstated anytime soon ...

Most people drive at a speed they are comfortable with. Most of the time that is faster than the posted limit.

Chunk49 - "It does save fuel."
And it does waste time. Shouldn't people be allowed to decide for themselves whether or not the trade-off is worth it?
dontuknowOH, that's nice, but it doesn't mean that you get to decide for others.

I just think that when new higher posted zones are in effect the speed crowd drivers will only up their notch speed even higher. The trends of other vehicles not driven say over 5 mph above the old limits, then will often go higher with the flow crowd.
Seems this then leads to some vehicles being only in fair shape get pressed for more severe service leading to some kind of failure, possibly dangerous failure.
Looking back on my younger years, I remember many guys saying "How fast will that motorcycle go, you have there"? I always replied "I don't care to find out"! The tires that came on it ,I always had my doubts about.... They make premium Racing tires, but mine were the OEM's stock, good looking but stock specs.
Me and 170+ MPH stayed far apart, my choice, still, with better mileage also, and less tire cost, plus a retirement era for doing other Great Stuff....!

There will be more speeding tickets given out if they do that on the interstates. Unless you're towing something it doesn't save that much if fuel to lose so much time on the road.
