"Why? Who keeps records like this unless you are in business."

Yeah and I just record mileage for my business. I ALWAYS use my debit card so I could go back and correlate bank deductions with fuel purchases but there's really no point. When I need to burn gas, I burn gas. It's not as if I can just stop getting gas for a bit because I've spent more than usual.

I've done better in the past but
this year I'm doing more local highway driving
so my fuel efficiency has dropped

from January 2014 to August 2014 (2010 Toyota Prius)

my average price $3.47/gallon (87 octane 10% ethanol)

total cost for gas $509.74
total gallons used 147.00 gallons
total miles traveled 8445.50 miles
overall mpg 57.45 mpg

I drive about 12,000 miles/year but gets about 60 mpg overall
so i burn around 200 gallons of gasoline per year.
Gasoline has averaged about $3.40/gallon over the past four years.

my Prius' annual gasoline bill is about $680.00...

The Prius' insurance is high - so when the insurance premiums are
factor in that the operating cost is not really that low....
if gasoline stays under $5/gallon, a less expensive conventional gas car who car insurance premiums are lower than the Prius' with reasonably good fuel efficiency like the Hyundai Accent or a Nissan versa may have an overall cheaper operational cost.
