Has anyone had much dealing with using the sports mode on the automatic transmission's? The Elantra has that and I am afraid that it will mess up the transmission if I alternate between sports mode and automatic. Any one had any problems with it? Thanks

I had one on my old Honda Accord. I used it rarely, but never had any problems.

Not sure why you would think you would have trouble? The sports mode typically just changes the shift point. It still shifts the same just at a different time to aid in acceleration.

If it is built into the car and is used correctly it will not mess up anything.

I wouldn't worry about using different transmission modes. THe switch is made for doing that.

I have had this in my last two cars, but rarely use it. I tend to forget about it.

for trucks, it is used to keep your gears where you want them if you are pulling a trailer or a heavy incline.

Most likely the mode simply tells the computer which shift model to use as the computer is controlling the transmission. You won't hurt the transmission but you might hurt your fuel economy having fun in Sport Mode.

Both mine have it.
One is a manual sports mode. Push it into the S mode and it always shifts at higher RPM.
The other one is Adaptive Sports - always shifts high if we drive wild,... and later after some miles/minutes will relax and shift low when we drive in the relaxed mode.

Both of our econos have floor shift automatic mode sticks, one has a smaller engine with Sports mode plus Electric Paddle Shifters. There is a difference but I haven't put enough mileage on the Sports equipped one yet or to check it out proper.

Probably need one of those $300. stainless mufflers on the back before putting it thru the paces, Yea! A little Bling sound to go with the Paddle stuff ! .... Get a little drone sound going maybe....

Won't hurt a thing. Sport mode isn't like "D3". What it does is change the firmness of the shifts, raises the shift points to put the engine in higher HP ranges. It will also downshift quicker and keep the RPM's in a higher range.

Our Nissan Rogue has this feature, one difference i notice is more torque on takeoff if I use it, and less fuel economy, engine does have higher rpms in sport mode. It's there use itif you need too.

I'm not familiar with the sport mode, but if it's OE, then it shouldn't hurt the transmission to use it. As OceanArcher said, it just changes the shift points, so is the engine will likely run at a higher rpm to provide more horsepower (HP = torque x rpm). The difference in wear on the engine is negligible, but your mileage will probably decrease in sport mode.

As far as whether it will hurt the transmission, those type of features are always idiot-proof; Hyundai doesn't want to be doing warranty repairs because someone switched when they shouldn't have.

Jeep Grand Cherokee has the terrain select feature. Usually it is in auto mode, but I recently tried sport mode. The drivers manual said it would drive like a rear wheel 2WD vehicle. I couldn't tell a lot of difference but it did seem to be not so stiff.

It is just the newer way of saying D3 or D4.

My station wagon has a NORM/PERF button next to the shift lever on the console. As I understand it, the switch controls some of the parameters of the transmission, along with the shifting pattern. Frankly, I don't use it
