I know its not a car but I love my 2010 Highlander Hybrid. Get in the middle and upper 20's in city and 30+ on the highway. Only complaint is the price tag, otherwise been a great vehicle

Its easy to have one's own personal opinion on things. In the opinion of people who actually put down their own money to buy a car, instead of just providing "armchair opinions", it appears to be the Toyota Prius, which while not the first one on the market, has been on the market continuously, longer than the others.
As more manufacturers begin to sell hybrid models, some other very good ones are sure to begin selling in quantity.
Here in Orange County, California, the Prius is extremely popular; you see them everywhere.

I have an 11' Insight base and am very happy with it. Most affordable car I ever owned. 83k on her and problem free. Never been in another hybrid so wouldn't know if it was the BEST hybrid car. :(

Prius. Well proven and reliable. Better yet bring those high mpg euro diesels to the USA.

The Hyundai Sonata would get my vote if I were to buy a hybrid. I currently own a 2008 Hyundai Sonata.

best value - prius liftback ( beats Honda Civic Hybrid in fuel efficiencyt/reliability) station wagon - prius v ( beats Ford C-max hybrid on fuel efficiency and cargo space) city - prius c (beats Honda insight in fuel efficiency) luxury highway - tie: Hyundai Sonata hybrid or for Fusion hybrid (beats Toyota Camry hybrid in luxury and ergonomics) suv /truck - no clear winner

"I think the Fusion would have to be right at the very top for the best bang-for-the-buck prize."
Priced at $28,000+ with real world mileage of about 37mpg, how do you figure?

If I were in the market for a hybrid, I'd give a very close look to the Ford Fusion. The only problem is that the trunk space is reduced 25%.
I think the Fusion would have to be right at the very top for the best bang-for-the-buck prize.

Better wording should be that it is the most bang-for-the-buck hybrid. The best hybrid car is the Porsche 918.

prius
my story: late 2011, our family was looking to buy a hybrid. why: we want best mpg. - this eliminate most luxury and suv hybrid. - plug-in hybrids's extra cost minus tax credit didn't have roi @12k mi/yr. - the best mpg hybrid was prius - decision was: bought 2011 prius 2.
i did a quick calculate of mi/kw of battery; prius has the best, then nissan leaf, then gm volt.

Ah yes, the normal cut and paste Ford is better mantra. If you total all the Ford hybrids sold, it doesn't equal one model year of the Prius. Sorry, I want proven technology. I currently own and have owned several hybrid or EV vehicles. I started with a 2000 GM EV1. It was a great vehicle. I got good battery range from it, never had an issue with it and it always worked. After the lease expired and GM took the vehicle back not giving me the option to purchase it, I got a used 1998 Chevrolet S-10 EV. Not a good experience with that one.
My next forty into alternative fuel/hybrid was the 2000 Honda Insight which I absolutely love. It gets the best mpg of any hybrid sold in the USA. Then I had a 2008 Toyota Prius until it was wrecked. Mileage in the mid 40's. Now I have a 2011 Prius Three, I love it.
Two of the vehicles in my driveway are Ford products (a 2002 Ford Thunderbird and a 2003 Lincoln Navigator) so I'm far from anti-Ford. But the truck you are recommending as the best things since sliced bread is due to be eliminated from Ford's lineup. What will that do to the availability of spare parts and the value of the vehicle? In addition, it isn't in the same mpg category as the Prius or Insight.
You cut and paste the same post in many threads always touting how great Ford Hybrid Vehicles are. This makes me wonder if you get some kind of credit when they sell one. I'd love to have an intelligent conversation about hybrid vehicles and compare them but not the same stuff pasted all over the forum repeatedly. What makes you think the vehicle is that much better? It certainly isn't the purchase price of a new one. It can't be the superior mpg.

Ford Escape Hybrid is a better built veh. than the Prius, I have one of each, both driven equally. The Ford with 140K miles feels much more solid than the Toy with 103K on it. I don't care who sold more, the Ford wins in our family!

Ford licensed Toyotas hybrid technolgy. In exchange Toyota received Ford's Diesel and direct-injection engine technology...
I guess Ford knows who has the best technology when it comes to hybrids...

Ford does build them bell, I'm begining to think you sell toyotas for a living!, just a few posts down I see J likes his Ford Fusion hybrid!, my Ford Escape hybrid has over 140,000 miles and trouble free, prius has many issues wrong with it!

Ford's new hybrid that isn't even out yet. That's the best you can tout? Face it. Toyota is proven technology that is here for you to purchase today. I have a Prius and I have averaged 49.4 mpg over 18,000 miles and 44 fill ups. The car is the best vehicle that I've ever owned. Which is saying a lot because I have a Lincoln Navigator and a Ford Thunderbird sitting in the driveway next to the Prius.
Best hybrid ever would be the 2000-06 Honda Insights. Phenomenal mpg and fun to drive. However, no back seat. If you notice there is only person in here spouting the Ford is Best mantra. He sticks to it pretty well. However, there are many that proclaim the Prius the best hybrid. Go to Fuelly and review cars real world mpg. The Plug-In-Prius is available in several states. It is a great vehicle as well. Toyota is on its third generation of hybrids and still producing.
Ford doesn't even build the hybrid systems in their vehicles. They buy them from the Japanese. Go figure.

I hate the quality of my wifes crappy prius BUT.. it does get 40-45. I have had to use my wifes prius to track problems she finds, and calc. mpg's are right in there at 41-44 for ours. The gas milage is the ONLY thing I like about it. Our Ford Escape Hybrid is a much more versatile car with far better quality and ave. mpg is 32.5, for a larger, SUV is admerable. Looking foward to Ford's new hybrids getting 47 mpg, this fall!

Having both a 1st Generation Honda Insight and a 3rd Generation Toyota Prius, both have their pluses. The Insight gets better mpg on the highway but doesn't have a back seat. The Prius gets better mpg in the city and has a back seat.
