Did you ever wonder where that little sticker on the pump certifying the accuracy of the pump comes from? Twice I've watched the certification process at a gas station. There's a utility truck with oddly-shaped steel vats to hold fuel dispensed from the pump and confirm the pump's accuracy.

It was interesting to watch the process. I did wonder what they do with the gas because I doubt the truck could consume it quickly enough.

Why would the county do it? It's under provincial jurisdiction.

No, unfortunately. But I always look for stickers... well, last few years anyway. :)

no I don't watch or wonder about certification stickers, but I've got favorite pumps at specific stations I always use because I seem to get more fuel from them...

Once after newer pumps were installed. I don't believe it was the county involved.

In Kentucky the Division of Weights and Measures checks these.

Oklahoma has this interesting (IMHO) system. They put the amount by which the pump is off on the certification sticker. As a result, many pumps in Oklahoma are biased to give out slightly more fuel than what you've bought.

In Texas, the pumps are checked every two years either by a Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) inspector or a repair technician certified by the TDA to check pumps. They are also checked when a complaint comes in. I have complained about fuel pumps, one station didn't have the current stickers and two others had prices where the sign didn't match the pump. In the case of non-current stickers, the TDA inspector reported back to me that they inspected the station, found the pumps were accurate, and they put up current stickers. Both cases of non-matching prices the price of fuel had changed between the time that I called and the inspector arrived.

Yes, twice a year. Once by the owners, once by the county auditor.

My city has a Department of Weights and Measures. As one of their duties, city employees visit every gas station and test the delivery of every gas pump.

hmmm... now that you mention it, no... I remember an old "Gasoline Alley" cartoon (that date mininana, or what?) in which little Joel used to carry around a quart bottle to test the accuracy of pumps... all who remember "Gasoline Alley," please nod, if you can...

Here, it is the responsibility of the pump owner to do the inspection.

Yes
I have even seen them close a pump down because it shorted the buyer.
I have seen the station close a pump down because it gave you to much.

I've seen the County regulator checking pumps on several occasions. Where I buy fuel the certification stickers are always current.

I've seen it once. It was a pickup truck with a couple of metal tubs with a glass piece to view the amount with a measuring stick or device labeled on it. I was checking it out to see how it was working. Guy didn't want to explain since he was working.
