We have one restaurant in our city that at times does the larges volume of business at the drive thru.
99.9% of the time I park and walk in for a togo order.

My observation at a very high volume hamburger chain is this-- people in the drive thru lane always get served first. People inside are secondary.
As much as I hate drive thrus, I sit in them when things are busy because I always see the drive thru people get their food before I do even though I've placed an order inside before they arrived
Rationale I see is, if they make people in the drive thru wait in a long line, they'll get PO'd and can easily drive off and lose the potential sale. They have those inside hooked because once their order has been taken, they got the sale regardless of how long they are made to wait.

I for one love drive thrus because I don't use them. Rather than waiting in that long ass line, I go inside and get immediate service and make fun of the people in the drive thru as they go by.

They will never close the drive thru lanes. I go to McDonalds most mornings around 5:00-6:00 AM to have coffee and read the paper. Many mornings I'm the only one inside the restaurant but there might be 10-20 cars in the drive thru lanes.

Drive thrus are pretty efficient, ever consider how much bigger the parking lots would have to be if there weren't drive thrus. People would be idling their engines waiting for a parking spot. Moronic idea.

Grandmas love Drive Thru's especially when they are Babysitting their Grandchildren.... and there are plenty of them! Consider how handy they, the D-T are for mother nature calls, conserve on the paper towels, learn to use both sides of the T..Tissue, ETC. Parking now/then it's Wonderful if you own a fuel guzzler..... they love fuel pumps..... and $ $ $ = Yours!

::::there is the Prius. Waiting in line it will turn the engine off completely even with the A/C running.::: I agree, and like the idea of a mild hybrid using start/stop tech. Far more efficient use of limited technology metals like lithium. A car like the Prius which can use the battery in town and use the ICE elsewhere. Optimizes the advantages of each propulsion system.

I think we would be better off not worrying about what someone else does, and more what we need to be doing.

I don't think the drive through owners would support that. They do provide additional employment as well.
One thing our community did was limit the number of drive through licenses.

Agreen with speedy700. We're too lazy. And besides, all of those people would be in front of me in line inside the restaurant. I think it does waste a lot of gas, however.

Will never happen. Americans are lazy so that's why they want drive-thru's and people are overweight. Removing them is not going to matter unless people change their eating habits also.

they are for some, plus after working a long day, to keep up with the bills, most can afford a bit of fuel to be in the comfort of their vehicle, instead of going into the restauarant and ordering and waiting on a hard chair.

And Hemond then there is the Prius. Waiting in line it will turn the engine off completely even with the A/C running. Strangely its more likely to run the engine for the heater.
Of course that energy has to come from somewhere before the traction battery has charge to crawl along in drive-through lane.
I think a far better improvement can be had synchronizing traffic lights so one rarely has to stop. Slowing and accelerating are total waste which is completely the government's blame. But what does the government do? Browbeat manufacturers into building hybrids to cover for the government's deficiencies.

A typical 4 cylinder uses 0.20 to 0.25 gal/hr. My Corolla used 0.18gal/hr. I measure it in real time with a permanently connected ScanGuage.
At .20gal/hr you use 0.0166 gal in 5 minutes. At $3.59 that works out to under 6cents. A Corolla used 5cents for 5minutes. Obviously this is inconsequential. Well worth it. I wouldn't bother picking 5 cents up off the ground. Plus the drive through is much faster than walking in. Plus I can listen to talk radio without having to interrupt and go inside.

General rule of thumb on how to "correctly" use a drive-thru: If there are more than 3 cars in line at the drive-thru, you will save not only money, but TIME by parking and going inside! This is especially true during the lunch or dinner rush!
Why you ask?: When you sit behind someone in drive-thru, it takes approximately 5 minutes to get served at a drive-thru IF you are the only car.
This means that every time you use a drive through, you burn about 18 cents worth of gas idling your car. If you start adding up the number of cars, and multiply the the 18¢ x the number of cars, it starts adding up REALLY FAST! Even though it takes a bit more effort (and requires you to get out of your vehicle and walk your (probably overweight) rear in to the restaurant), you save money. In the course of year, that could add up to more than $50 if you go 2x a week to a fast food place - more than enough to pay for about 6x meals!
How do you save time? Well, for one, while you spend those almost 15 minutes waiting on the drive-thru, if you go inside, the average time during PEAK hours, is only 5 minutes and 36 seconds! You just saved yourself 7-1/2 minutes! In a rush? Go INSIDE and order!
Average fast food wait time
Drive thru wastes gas

Ran errands with my bud all day yesterday. We went to 5 drive thrus in 1 day. 3 times to coffee drive thru, plus bank, and drug store. No wait of course at any of them. Streamlined. Bud wanted to stop at McDonalds, so that would have been another. I didn't want to stop there though. We went to a nice sit down place instead.

Ive never used them but my ex used to use them. Their quite convenient when you have young kids and can get your stuff quickly without going through the labor of getting the kids in & out of the car & in & out of the store.

Turn off your car while you are sitting still at the drive through. Why is this such a difficult concept to understand?

::::: people should choose to not use the drive-through for environmental reasons, for personal reasons, for fitness, for time,:::: I agree, the more people don't use drive throughs, for whatever your reason, thats one less car ahead of me. I encourage you to walk in.
