I have a minivan and I try to keep the tank around half full or higher and my hubby has a smaller car. He doesn't have a problem with letting the tank run down until the light's on. Yes, I've tried to tell him it's bad to do that...

I don't drive much, so fuel lasts a while for me. Does the weight of the fuel make that much of a difference in mpg? Is it better to keep it full if you can (when prices drop) or less?

fill it up and let it drop down to 1/4 or so and then fill it up

I try to keep it full but sometimes let it get down to 1/4 before filling it up again.

Keep the weight down to half a tank. You could get 5% or so better mileage
for taking all unnecessary stuff out of your trunk or bed. Every hundred lbs matters.

And keep your tires up to proper pressure, THE #1 neglected factor.

It's impossible to keep it at a certain level unless you buy gas every day. I always fill up when it gets down to a 1/4 tank.

All my vehicles lately on average hang near 1/3 to just over 1/2 tank of fuel usually. I don't do any storage except for 10 gal. mowing gas, ETC. same for diesel fuel. That gives me a 100% chance to double my capacity when prices drop, then to refuel, on one trip, extra containers on hand.

Extra weight less transported everywhere you might drive daily on any vehicle. W..FM...... OK! One trip not often, is NOT a necessary special trip, but a drop-in, check Gasbuddy price info first!

I keep my tank full. The lower it goes the more you pay to fill up,so that is why I won`t let my tank go below half,or even around 3/4`s when I fill back up. And I drive a lot of milage every week. And it is only twice per week that I fill up my tank in my mini-van.

Since I use conventional gas which costs more, I get gas according to the price. I fill up before the price goes up. Saves on fuel also. Get more MPG with conventional gas.

I will let my tank go down under 1/4 if i want to check mileage only, otherwise I like to fill it around the half tank mark all the time as I'm driving a truck and it costs a bundle to fill it otherwise.

Since gas prices are higher now I don't take trips. I'll stop only on the way home or to work if I need something. My routine allows me to fill up my 2005 Malibu Maxx every 2 weeks like clockwork. It's usually always just under 1/4 of a tank, never quite makes it to the light coming on. Been doing this for the past 5 years.

I fill up under a quarter tank to empty. Only ever hit the idiot light twice. If the price of gas is expected to rise, then I fill up sooner.

I TRY to fill up at 1/4 tank but it does dip way below that sometimes. There's really no point in keeping a 1/2 tank of gas, unless you need to scoot out of town at a moments notice.

In my little Metro, I've run it until I was on fumes more times than I can count. I'm still running the original fuel pump after 20 years and over 300,000 miles.

Nothing wrong with waiting for the low fuel idiot light, if said light is reliable.

Last time the low fuel idiot light signaled on my Prius the engine quit running a mile later. I don't let it get that low anymore. Now I fill at 300-450 miles (~6 to ~9 gallons on 11.9 tank) wether it thinks I need to or not.

When tank hits half, I look to fill it up. With gas prices always jumping around, I try and fill it when it is lowest.
