My days of driving for performance are long over. I will choose a vehicle with sufficient power to merge on the highway and climb hills, after that fuel efficiency is the primary consideration. No matter how "clean" the engine is, every gallon of gas burned produces about 20 lbs of CO2 and that's harming the world. Until we come up with carbon neutral biofuels and other kinds of propulsion systems that don't produce CO2 emissions, the responsible thing to do is consume as little fuel as possible.

I operate the car that I am in as it was intended to be. If a sports car, than the mileage will be much worse than if it were an econobox.

economy!! Even economy cars have better performance than some performance cars had years back. When I look at muscle cars from the 60's and 70's and their performance I kind of shake my head at how they would stack up to today's offerings.

Who says you have to choose? The BMW 335d made 425 lb-ft of torque and got 36mpg. Pity they just stopped making it a few months ago. :(

I still own a GM vehicle with the 3.8 ltr. I don't even know the HP. but it is in good shape, runs snappy, gas mileage 30+ mostly,I bought it as one owner(known friend;histoty record) At that time it had a cold start problem, but ran fine after till next occurance.

Bad wire connector to fuel pump/fuel filter /marginal cond F..pump, car sat a lot in garage(stale fuel) Once fixed good midrange city/hiway adv. performance/mileage for an 88"year V/6. This car can be improved on,but haven,t yet,a change in tire type would be first, wheels second, etc. LOL

Since I do a lot of towing with my truck, I need power over gas economy.

I like the middle reasonable power and reasonable economy. Such cars can be driven to achieve higher economy by judicious driving and when you feel otherwise floor it!

You want both, then you need to buy the new Toyota S model Corolla, more power, better mpg and a wonderful car to drive and ride in.

I see technology as closing the gap between performance/economy,but at a heafty price. Most new adds state V/6 engines today over 250-300+ HP and still abling the driver to get nudging 30+ mpg. at times.

The multispeed gearing of new future trannys for the hotter turbo 4 cyl. engines have performance potential gains, still more economy, all with a high end price. Depends on who can afford it.So it's there myop.

Does it have to be black or white. High or low. Hot or cold
Why Performance or economy?
How about compromise? or How about something between?

Ive had a few cars in the past year or two. I started off with my trusty 2002 silverado. Had 120,000 miles on it. Still ran like a champ. But it was time for a new car. Bought a 2010 Camaro SS. Loved that thing. But found it was difficult to drive in the Chicago winters. Traded for a 2011 Ford F150. Got tired of the gas bill on that beast, and traded that for a 2012 Kia Optima Turbo.

So now I have a good mix of economy and performance. I can get 25mpg around town (good enough for me). and nearly 35mpg on the highway. Its got 274hp which is awesome for a little turbo I4 engine. I will go back to a truck or V8 Sports car someday when I earn more money.

Forty years ago........POWER!!! Now....ECONOMY!!!! However, there are some fairly powerful cars that get acceptable mpg.

What I want? Economy. What I've got? Low power AND poor mileage.
