Going by fueleconomy.gov estimates.
For metric users, a car that consumes less than 5.88 Liters per 100 kilometers.

I owned one once. A 1996 Saturn SL. Now, they've revised the estimates to say 36 mpg highway, but the original sticker mileage (can be seen on fueleconomy.gov) was 29 city and 40 highway. My worst mileage driving that car was 38. And I AVERAGED 41 over the life of it.

I miss that car.

My 1991 Geo Metro averaged 54-55 mpg when new. When it reached 150,000 miles, it still was getting 45 or so.

My '95 Geo Metro gets just over 40 mile to the gallon on the highway, which is where I do most of my driving.

It has the 1.3 liter 4 cylinder in it. I just purchased the car and have not tuned it up yet so I expect the mileage to get even better once I tune it.

Before E-10 was added I could get at least 40 mpg. at times on a "94" Escort fastback coupe with A/C off driving highway @ 60 mph steady!

Doubt that there are any that actually do get and maintain that economy. Maybe a hybrid type with supplemental fuel

My 1996 VW Passat diesel TDI 5 speed gets 43+ in the Michigan winter and 48 in the summer. 332,000 miles on it right now. I'm working on trying to raise it to 50 mpg with a new fuel additive and a new air filter. I try to max at 70 mph, never been over 80 in this car since I bought it last June at 300,000. Looking for 400,000 and maybe asking it to go 500,000! Just depends on the costs of maintenance.

I own a 2011 Prius and have yet to get under 50mpg in town. I was even able to achieve 60mpg on the highway, I love this car.
