For metric users, a car that consumes less than 5.88 Liters per 100 kilometers. I owned one once. A 1996 Saturn SL. Now, they've revised the estimates to say 36 mpg highway, but the original sticker mileage (can be seen on fueleconomy.gov) was 29 city and 40 highway. My worst mileage driving that car was 38. And I AVERAGED 41 over the life of it. I miss that car.

It has the 1.3 liter 4 cylinder in it. I just purchased the car and have not tuned it up yet so I expect the mileage to get even better once I tune it.

I'm working on trying to raise it to 50 mpg with a new fuel additive and a new air filter. I try to max at 70 mph, never been over 80 in this car since I bought it last June at 300,000. Looking for 400,000 and maybe asking it to go 500,000! Just depends on the costs of maintenance.
