Lets be real, the "Smart car" was made for Euro City Streets Driving, and Parking. The Smart will not mainly work in the USA because it is way to small for our highways, and if you do not live in the city parking isn't so bad in Suburbia. Besides the EURO smarts all have Turbo!

No. 1) I get claustrophobic just looking at it. 2) I like the flexibility of giving a herd (gaggle?, pride?) of teenagers and their pile of stuff a ride at any time. 3) I don't like gas stations enough to go there waaaaaay more often to fill the tiny gas tank. Assuming the advertised 40 mpg and 8.7 gallon tank is accurate, I'd lose 150 on every tank. I don't want to get to know my local gas stations that well. 4) I like having a car that holds pretty much anything so I don't have to ask others to carry large items for me. 5) I can easily remove the minivan seats to help a friend move.
For me, a smart car doesn't seem very smart. :)

NotCook - It's not a roll cage in there. It's called a space frame. And Nascar only has to worry about the vehicle kinetic energy of one vehicle. Not the other one that hits you with 4 times more energy to apply to that timy space frame you are riding in.
But you are right the body panels are not part of the safety equipment, just like Nascar.

We had one for a couple of years, and really liked it. Not sure about the $20K sticker, as there were 3 models at $14K, $16K and $18K (Cabrio). It isn't the skin of the vehicle that is going to protect you in a collision, but the frame. The smart has a NASCAR-class roll cage.

Oh, you mean the 'Stupid' death trap. A motorcycle is safer since you can hear the truck coming.

I really don't think the smart car is all that smart. There are other cars out there that ride much better due to a longer wheel base, seat more people, get better mileage and don't have to use high test gasoline. Purchasing a smart car would seem to be DUMB!

not me, to expensive to drive, gas mileage not what it should be for such a small car, and not safe when involved in an accident with a larger vehicle.

SMART car looks and feels so small I will be afraid to go any road that the limit is more than 70km/h.

Amazingly the SMART car is incredibly rigid and resistant to impact.

I don't think that would motivate me to buy one though. They say in the video that the car may be more likely to survive than the occupants.

Thanks, JohnTIZ! Good work-- we have to be careful and skeptical about these things, even when the visual evidence is compelling and seems convincing. What with Photoshop these days....
For those of you who haven't checked out John's link, it was a bonafide accident--but NOT the Indian SmartCar. It was a Ford Escape! The Sheriff's office said this would have been the case with any car...

But my spidey senses were tingling as I viewed that photo.

I went into a SMART dealer to ask if I could get the casket option included; the one with six side handles to attach after the accident so I don't have to invest in a pine box.
The salewomen looked a little angry. Hehehe
